It can't be denied that there are major changes going on in the casual gaming market. I’m not talking about the rapid growth and increasing relevance of social games, nor the rise of hidden object adventures as the dominant genre. I’m talking about the slow but very obvious disappearance of unique and daring casual games in general - at least when it comes to PC and Mac downloads. The recent acquisition of casual games developer Sandlot Games by social game company Digital Chocolate is just the latest indicator of what has been a slow but steady transition.

TradeWinds is a pirate-themed game that blends treasure-hunting, exploration, and combat…which is a little odd to see just a week after Playfish shut down the similarly-themed Pirates Ahoy. TradeWinds is about what you’d expect out of pirate-themed games on Facebook now, full of fights with rivals and chances to scour deserted islands for lost treasure. It also features some less typical gameplay elements, including the ability to travel between island cities buying and selling goods. It’s a game that makes good use of the pirate theme without feeling like a complete rehash of other pirate games.

Developer Sandlot Games tries an interesting spin-off of its Cake Mania franchise Fashion Forward. Risha, one of Jill’s best friends and already quite an important part of Cake Mania: Lights, Camera, Action, moves to L.A. but is discouraged to find that there are literally no shops with normally sized clothes. She then immediately decides to open a new glitzy fashion boutique that caters to all shapes and sizes.

Who would have thought that Granny would make it this far, eh? Some gaming heroes don't make it past their first release, let alone received six instalments. Yet here she is, back to her old Chuckie Egg style cat-saving tricks.
