Next Games’ Next Project: A Blade Runner 2049 Game

If you’re not excited yet about the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 film, it’s likely you’ll get there before it releases in October. Not only is it attracting a lot of curiosity because it’s the long-awaited sequel to one of the most iconic sci-fi movies ever, it’s also got a killer cast that includes Harrison Ford (naturally) and Ryan Gosling, plus it’s being helmed by director Denis Villeneuve.

But we talk about mobile games here, not movies … unless those games are about movies. Next Games is jumping into the fray for Blade Runner 2049, announcing today that it is partnering with Alcon Entertainment to create a mobile game based on the film.

“We are thrilled to work on Blade Runner, a true pop culture icon,” Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen said in a press release. “We are determined to deliver on Blade Runner’s unique themes and vision of the future. Both we and Alcon Entertainment value mobile games that are authentic and true to the original property. Our partnership is a confirmation of Next Games’ mission to redefine the way entertainment franchises can be transformed into, and enhanced by, highly engaging mobile games enjoyed by millions of fans globally.”

Next Games already has some experience adapting popular IPs, as the studio was responsible for The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land, which released in the fall of 2015. That was a strategy title that our reviewer described as “X-COM light,” but there’s no indication as of yet if the Blade Runner 2049 game will follow in its footsteps or be something else entirely.

It could be a while until we hear anything about an announce date, but since the Blade Runner 2049 movie hits theaters on Oct. 6, somewhere around that time seems a good bet for the game to pop up in app stores as well. Until then, remember to always stay frosty, because you never know who might be a replicant.
