If this is covered in another post, I apologize.  I have spent the last hour trying to figure out exactly how I can capture a screenshot of a game I am playing on a Vista PC.  I would also like to be able to print a copy. Send a Kudo Post a reply Quote & Reply

I run XP, but they might have something on Vista too...

This is easier than trying to explain, click here

You will also be able to print the capture, that's if you want to use the ink, lol!

I can't believe there is much difference

  • Hi solarsarah, Here's how to

    Report as Inappropriate

    Hi solarsarah,

Here's how to do it if you're using Microsoft Paint. (This program comes with Windows so it's probably easiest for you.)

    1. Open up Microsoft Paint by clicking on the Start button in the lower left of the screen, then click All Programs > Accessories > Paint.

    2. Open the game and at the moment you want to take the screenshot, press the Print Screen key on your keyboard (it might be abbreviated to something like Prt Scr or Prnt Scrn)

    3. Exit out of the game, go into Paint and click on the blank white square, then click Ctrl+V (hold down the Ctrl key and press the "V" key at the same time). The image capture you took should appear in the window.

To save the image, click "File" in the upper left of the program, then "Save."

If you want to print it, the image will probably be pretty big so you'll have to resize it. In the menu along the top, click Image > Resize/Skew. A little box will open. You'll see two boxes with 100 in each. Change these values to 50, then click "Ok."

Now, go back to "File" and click "Page Setup." Click the circle that says "Landscape" and click "Ok."

Finally, go to "File" and select "Print."

I hope this works, let me know if anything is not clear!

    Report as Inappropriate

Hey Annie, a stickie is something we add to a post to keep an article on top of the page so it doesn't get buried under the comments that come after it. In some forums you will see a post-it note or a thumb tack icon symbolizing that a thread has been "stickied". Here at Gamezebo, there's no way  to tell a post has been stickied unless you notice that it is always on top even after other things have followed it.

The things that we sticky the most are forums that indicate that a new walkthrough has been posted. The "Welcome Newcomers" always stays on top because we want our new visitors to find it. That kind of stuff.

    Thanks, Margie

Hi kayleenw, what operating system do you have? If you're running Windows then you should have Paint. It comes with every Windows computer.

Paint comes already installed with Windows. You should have it listed in Start-Programs-Accessories-Paint, or you can go to Start-Run, type in mspaint, and press OK. Then Paint will load.

The standard way to catch a screenshot from a game, or anything on your computer, is to first activate the Num L(oc)k on your keyboard. Then, press the button Prt Sc, which stands for Print Screen.

Open any image program (Paint, Adobe Photoshop, HP Photostudio, etc), open a new blank image file (Normally, it'll automatically size to 1200x1600, or somewhere in that size ratio). Press Ctrl+V to paste your screenshot, and there you go!

Using this standard screenshot format doesn't always work for games or movies though, in which case you can install a screenshot-specfic program, such as Pinnacle. I personally use (and highly recommend) smartison ScreenCopy. Any of these programs you can either search and download on the internet, or some you may purchase at a local computer store, though that shouldn't be necessary seeing as most are free online.

    Hope that helps!

Many games also pause if you hold down alt and hit tab. The game will minimize and pause while you paste into paint or whatever you use. Then you can just click on the game on your task bar and it will go back to full screen and put you back into the game.

I capture all of my screen shots the was Eric described but instead of exiting the game I alt-tab out. Again this is *most* games on *my* computer. Give it a try Laughing

Also, if for some wierd reason you don't have paint, you can also use Open Office, it is a free download and it has a paint like program but any image editting program should work. I have been using them for years and never once had an issue.

I have Vista Home Basic and it doesn't come with the "snipping tool" and of course the "screen print" key doesn't work because it's for XP. I found out Vista's Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate Editions comes with it. I'm going to try some of the other ideas listed here. I hope I find one that works.

Debbika, it might be worth to try pressing Alt + Print together, instead of only pressing Print

I´m using Vista Home Premium, and both ways work for me. Print does a snapshot the current window/Application, ALT + Print of the whole screen.
This should work with Vista Basic, too.

Try to take a screenshot from this browser window first, because for some games it just wouldn´t work.

didn't see it mentioned, and my reply is a bit late, but a great freeware program (completely clean; no adware) is IrfanView.  I use it on my XP & it IS compatible with Vista & 7.  just type "irfanview" in Google & you'll get a link.

just press the PrintScreen button on your keyboard, open IrfanView & you're good to go.  save it in whatever format you want.

maybe need to try a different download site than cnet.com or tucows.com for XnView.  both those sites freeze up my browser while things called i.i.com.com or dw.com.com load which are forced adware cookies trying to override the cookie blocks i have set and insert themselves into my locked hosts file.  also may have to do with the Anti-Banner feature in my Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 suite.

probably best to go direct to XnView's website: http://www.xnview.com/en/features.html

looks like a neat program, too, sukibabe.

(for some reason, i can't get the "link" button to work which is why i had to post the actual link.)
