PyramidValley Adventure Review: PyramidVille Adventure is a marked improvement over its Facebook predecessor

Jan 26, 2012

A while back, Kobojo released its own version of the virtual space-oriented business sim genre with PyramidVille on Facebook. Harkening back to the realm of ancient Egypt, the title was fairly standard, but now, with the help of BulkyPix, the studio is attempting to improve the game with the new iOS version PyramidVille Adventure. Hosting much of the standards of the genre, this new version does away with many of predecessor’s social elements for a somewhat more in-depth management aspect, simple mini-games, and a more convenient platform.

Otherworld: Spring of Shadows Review: A woman buys a home in the country to find peace and quiet but is pulled into a supernatural war among the Fae

Jan 26, 2012

Interactive entertainment can be many things: a distraction, an escape, a means of relaxation... On rare occasion however, it transcends these commonplace things and becomes something else—magic. When that happens, the experience is akin to getting sucked into a page-turning novel or watching spellbound as a great movie unfolds; you're completely immersed in the experience and are sad when it ends. At the risk of sounding gushy, I'll confidently assert that Otherworld: Spring of Shadows is one of those rare games.

Bursting the Game Bubble Rumor

Jan 26, 2012

The fear of another technology bubble is washing over the gaming industry like a bad case of the flu, tainting important decisions about everything from investments to innovations. Many see the current wave of financial news from Facebook, Zynga and PopCap Games and draw comparisons with the great Internet boom and its subsequent collapse. Trepidation has nearly paralyzed some game studios as they worry about starting production on new titles. Analysts have also begun to question the valuations of recent investments in the gaming market, while some gaming companies feel pressured to sell before the bubble bursts.

But will it?

Derby Days Review: Raise a champion in Derby Days

Jan 26, 2012

There are plenty of social games that ask you to take care of animals. Sometimes it’s as part of a farm, sometimes they’re simply pets for you to raise. But most of the time you’re not really raising them for any particular reason; there’s usually not much of an end goal in mind. And that’s part of what makes Derby Days stand out. While much of the gameplay mechanics will be familiar, the process of turning a fledgling racehorse into a champion is very satisfying.

Paper Monsters Review: Paper Monsters is everything good about Super Mario Bros and LittleBigPlanet crammed into your iPhone

Jan 25, 2012

I've been staring at my screen for the better part of an hour, trying to figure out how to start this review. You see, I've just finished playing Paper Monsters, and the game's left me literally speechless. It's just that good. It's like Super Mario Bros. and LittleBigPlanet decided to put aside their differences, have a beautiful baby, and let the little bundle of awesome grow up on my iPhone. Seriously.

RUMOR: iPhone 5 could have a bigger screen, better for gaming?

Jan 25, 2012

I know, I know – iPhone 5 and iPad 3 rumors are like snowflakes. No two are alike, and they usually melt away into nothing. But hear us out. The latest rumor on the iPhone 5, being reported by 9to5Mac, supposedly comes directly from a reliable source at Foxconn in China (the company that Apple outsources production to). What’s more, it’s the same source that told them there would be no iPhone 5 last fall, but instead an iPhone 4S – which for those of you playing along at home is exactly how things panned out. So what, pray tell, is this latest rumor of which we speak?

Margaritaville Online Review: The most fun you can have searching for a lost shaker of salt

Jan 25, 2012

It sounds like a joke. And maybe that’s how it started, but it turns out that Margaritaville Online -- a game based on Jimmy Buffett’s song and chain of restaurants of the same name -- is also one of the most fully realized and enjoyable games released on Facebook to date. Far from a cheap cash in, Margaritaville Online gives you a large world to explore, plentiful and varied mini-games to play, and arguably the most impressive visuals on the platform. It’s almost unbelievable just how much you’ll enjoy wasting away in this virtual paradise.
