Hidato Adventures Review

Jun 20, 2011

3.5

At first glance you’d probably be inclined to think Hidato Adventures is a Sudoku game and either sit down or move on (depending on your current tolerance for Sudoku). But good news! This game has nothing at all do to with Sudoku, save for the fact that it’s also a number puzzle. It’s actually quite a refreshing puzzle game unlike anything else I’ve played.

Skipping Stone Review

Jun 20, 2011

4

Skipping Stone is the latest in Gamevil's line-up of nefariously addictive games. It may also be the first title within the company's stable to feature an anthropomorphic stone. That's right. Not only does the titular character have an expressive face, it also sports arms and a skeletal structure: something I found both strangely adorable and rather disturbing. Unusual protagonist aside, the basic conceit here is simple: get the stone as far as it can go.

World Cup Table Tennis Review

Jun 18, 2011

3

Did you know that ping-pong, once upon a time, served as the ice-breaker between Communist China and the United States in the 1970s? It's true: the U.S. and China sent ping-pong players to each others' countries, which paved the way for Richard Nixon's diplomatic visit to Beijing in 1972. In short, ping-pong helped change the world, and now you can play it on your iPhone with World Cup Table Tennis.

City Wars Review

Jun 18, 2011

3

City Wars is like Risk, but without the same level of strategy. It’s a game about domination, taking over city after city, one hexagon at a time. But the frequent battles are so automatic, and so little feedback is given about why you won or lost, that there’s virtually no strategy involved other than ensuring you’re at a high enough level and stocked up with strong units. It’s still fun, but far from satisfying.

Zoo World 2 Review

Jun 18, 2011

4.5

Full-blown sequels to hit Facebook games aren’t all that common just yet, but if they could all be as good as Zoo World 2 we wouldn’t mind seeing more. The successor to Zoo World takes everything that made the original a four star game and makes it better: more options, better visuals, and just an improved experience overall.

CityVille Hometown Preview

Jun 17, 2011

As big as Zynga might be on Facebook, the social gaming giant has had something of a chequered past on the iPhone. After a few early, watered-down versions of Facebook games like Mafia Wars and Street Racing hit the App Store back in 2009, the company seemed to maintain iOS radio silence for almost a year. That was broken with the release of FarmVille, but shortly thereafter their lips were once again sealed on mobile devices. Now, after months of smart acquisitions in the mobile field, Zynga finally seems to be coming out of their shell. Last week’s release of Hanging With Friends has already soared to #1 in the charts, and hot on its heels Zynga is prepping a new portable version of their popular CityVille for release.

Zynga sues for Vostu for copying its games. Pot calling the kettle black?

Jun 17, 2011

This is ironic, or ironico, as they say in Portuguese. Zynga is suing Brazilian social games developer Vostu for copying its games. Zynga, of course, has been accused and sued for copying games themselves (or Mafia Wars, which was inspired by Mob Wars) so if they are filing a lawsuit, the evidence must be over-whelming.

Based on the reporting by Techcrunch, it’s compelling. Screen shots of Vostu’s MegaCity are quite carbon-copy like to Zynga’s CityVille.

Filing a lawsuit for copy infringement in the world of games, where “cloning” is an actual business strategy is a slippery slope.

Temple of Mahjong Review

Jun 17, 2011

3

Temple of Mahjong is a fairly standard little mahjong game for Facebook that uses collecting and unlockables to help encourage users to replay frequently. You begin with only four tilesets and three layouts to play with, but you unlock either a new tile or a new layout (sometimes both) every time you complete a session. Where most mahjong games focus on clearing a board, Temple of Mahjong is built around trying to get a high score before your allotted time runs out. Certain tiles grant bonuses when matched, so you can rack up extra-high scores by making tile matches rapidly during the bonus period.

Zzed Review

Jun 17, 2011

4

Mobile gaming just keeps getting better and better. In the last few months, I’ve played more unique, original gameplay concepts on my iPhone than I have in the last several years on the big-boy consoles. Case in point: Zzed. It’s a great mix of Asteroids, Bust-a-Move, and pool that somehow all seems to work.

Dreams of a Geisha Review

Jun 17, 2011

4

Dreams of a Geisha may on the outset appear to be just a beautifully-themed, but standard match-three title, but look deeper and you’ll see a relaxing yet highly complex puzzler that offers four different gameplay modes and tons of extras within each. While not without faults, all of these elements combine to form a pretty enjoyable package in the end.

The Timebuilders: Caveman's Prophecy Review

Jun 17, 2011

3.5

If you always wanted to learn how the cavemen left their caves, The Timebuilders: Caveman’s Prophecy might have a far-fetched, yet entertaining and quirky answer for that. The sequel to The Timebuilders: Pyramid Rising goes back in time even further, presenting to the player a prehistoric era with dinosaurs, mammoths, and houses that look more like caves. While we were not overly impressed with the predecessor, we can definitely say that the second part of the series has improved in nearly every respect.

Tapjoy launches fund to help developers port to Android

Jun 16, 2011

Apple’s App Store is a big place. It’s a big place that’s full of small, wonderful, and imaginative developers. Some of those developers have spread their wings to the Android platform. Others haven’t, and it’s not necessarily due to a lack of interest – a lot of these fine folks simply lack the funds or skills needed to port their games from one device to another. Tapjoy is looking to help select developers jump these hurdles with their new $5 million Tapjoy Android Fund.

Battlepath Monsters Review

Jun 16, 2011

3

Battlepath Monsters is a basic role-playing game with some simple location-based features. These don’t actually do anything to affect the gameplay, however, and instead are simply things that might make you say “oh, neat,” before you forget about them. The rest is as straightforward an RPG as you're likely to find, with plenty of monsters to battle and weapons to outfit your adventurer with. It works well enough, but for those who like RPGs, it will also leave you wishing for a deeper experience.
