I have a soft spot in my heart for city builders, even if plenty of them on mobile have been underwhelming. Lunar Battle wants to exploit that soft spot by baking a cake made of city-building and topping it with a glorious icing of outer space battles.

Except for the cake analogy, that’s not something I just made up. Atari announced this week that Lunar Battle is coming soon to iOS and Android devices, and it really does bring both of those usually disparate elements together.

You’ll take control of a group of space explorers that crash lands (the only kind of landing there is in space, usually) on a strange planet. Not only will you have to guide them to gather resources and construct a place to live, they’ll also need your assistance fighting off enemies of both the AI and human variety. In space, in case that wasn’t clear.

Atari has some experience with arcade-style space combat, and the press release announcing Lunar Battle suggests that the battles will draw inspiration from classics like Asteroids and Star Raiders.

You can see for yourself in the trailer we’ve got right here:

Despite the ominous music, it’s quite possible Lunar Battle might have a bit of a sense of humor about it since one of the resources your colony needs is beer. Along with both PvP and PvE space fights, expect to put your skills to the test in 50 campaign levels, good for stocking up on salvage and other rewards.

It just occurred to me that the Lunar Battle suggests this game should be taking place on the moon. Maybe moons are involved somehow. In any case, city-building and spaceships sound like an unbeatable combination, so I’ll be checking the App Store and Google Play for this one later this fall.
