In a lot of ways, May 2015 was a slow month for spectacular mobile game releases. But when one (or possibly even two) of those games are potential Game of the Year candidates? It becomes really hard to call this a bad month.

Without further ado, here’s what made May 2015 such a great time to put games in our pockets:

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

We don’t really have a “game of the month” pick nowadays, but if there were, this would be it. Geometry Wars 3 perfectly captures everything that fans love about the series while simultaneously building something new. Whether you’re experienced with the series or not, though, Dimensions is an absolute must-play — especially if you’re a fan of frantic twin-stick shooty goodness.

Chaos Rings III

Don’t worry if you haven’t played the past games in the series; Square Enix’s third entry in their mobile-exclusive RPG franchise is newcomer friendly and offers plenty of what JRPG fans love about good ol’ Squeenix. In addition to great turn-based combat, that also means you’ll be sitting through plenty of narrative — so if you’re planning on picking this up, be ready to block some time out of your schedule.

Capitals

Word games come and go, but multiplayer word games that are as much about strategic conquest as they are about spelling? Those will live on my iPhone forever. If you feel the same, be sure to grab Capitals. It’s the latest release from Tiny Tower makers NimbleBit, and it might just be the best word game we’ve seen this year.

Sproggiwood

If you’ve ever heard the term “roguelike” and approached it with a mix of caution and curiosity, Sproggiwood might just be the game for you. A lighter take on the genre, the game offers a light-hearted sense of humor to go with its turn-based adventuring.

Earthcore: Shattered Elements

How do you take the kind of satisfaction that can only be found in deep, involved trading card games and distill it into something that can be played in moments? Tequila Mobile has seemingly solved this riddle with Earthcore — a card game that uses Rock/Paper/Scissors as a base and builds off it to offer a game that’s not only uniquely challenging, but has a great story built around it as well.
