When Activision released Skylanders Trap Team on tablets last Fall, it seemed as though they were throwing the AAA gauntlet down. Releasing a full-fledged console game for mobile devices? It was unheard of — and yet it seemed as though after this, anything was possible.

But then nobody else did the same.

Fret not, AAA aficionados. Activision is still committed to delivering top notch experiences on portable devices. In addition to their upcoming Guitar Hero Live‘s mobile incarnation, the company has just confirmed that the next iteration of Skylanders will be making a return visit to tablets as well. But this time it’s going to be be an iPad exclusive.

Sorry Android.

Launching September 20th in North America, Skylanders Superchargers might just be the most logical next step yet for the franchise, introducing the one thing no toy line should be without: vehicles. There will be 20 available at launch, as well as 20 new characters. And, as always, all of your existing Skylander toys can come along for the ride too.

How will vehicles shake up the gameplay experience? The press release describes it thusly:

Kids can speed across Skylands’ roads in vehicular combat, race down roaring rapids and engage in aerial dogfights as they barrel-roll through enemy swarms for the first time.

If you’re worried that means this is a completely different Skylanders experience from what you’re used to, don’t panic — Activision says they’ve mixed these new elements in with the traditional on-foot adventuring you’re already used it.

We’re delighted to see Activision continue its trailblazing initiative to bring AAA console games to smartphones and tablets, and with E3 just around the corner, it should be interesting to see if other companies follow suit.

Expect to grab the full experience for your iPad at retail locations when Skylanders Superchargers hits store shelves this Fall with an MSRP of $74.99.
