Crossy Road is an endless Frogger-like from Hipster Whale. In our previous guide, we provided tips on dodging traffic and other hazards in order to snag a high score. This guide will explicitly cover the different characters in Crossy Road, and how to unlock those that have special requirements. We will update this Crossy Road characters list with new info on any additional characters added to Crossy Road in the future.

Below, all currently available characters are grouped into different types: those that are winnable but do not visually change the world (Basic), those that are winnable but do visually change the world (Special), and those that must be unlocked in a certain way/cannot be won in the randomized gacha lottery (Unlockable). Within these individual groups, characters are generally listed in the order they appear on the character select screen in-game.

This was mentioned in our previous guide but is worth clarifying again: no character has an advantage while playing. No one runs faster, jumps farther, or earns more points. You may find some characters easier to play than others—e.g., characters that run in the dark make it harder to see obstacles ahead—but there is no specific technical advantage to playing one over the other. Play with whomever you want, and have fun!

Basic Characters

These characters run on the normal daytime road. They do not change the appearance of the world. They may make unique sounds or movements, but these are self-contained.

She runs on the Pac-Man-themed world: everything is black with neon outlines that change color every few seconds. White pellets dot the landscape and a Pac-Man “cop car” sometimes zooms by. Instead of being captured by the eagle, Pac-Chicken is devoured by the Pac-Man 256 glitch if she stands still for too long. Unlike the original chicken which clucks, Pac-Chicken is silent while running.
  • Ida:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Ida
    CrossyRoad_InAction_Ida

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.2, Indie games update, October 4th, 2015.
    • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
    • Traits: Ida runs on a Monument Valley-themed world. The entire perspective of the game is shifted to match that of Monument Valley, with a more angled view than the standard characters. Within this perspective, your character or other aspects of the environment may hide one another—for instance, lily pads will sometimes be hidden behind towers—making it a slightly harder world to run on. Instead of trees, the environment is populated with the stairs and towers from Ida’s world, as well as buttons which, when stepped on, raise or lower nearby towers slightly. This is merely for fun and doesn’t affect gameplay (Ida cannot enter the stairs or towers). Crows from Monument Valley are scattered about and will caw when Ida draws near, although Ida herself is silent. The entire world has a lovely red/pink hue, although the cars are the same color as on the normal, daytime map. The logs and trains match the blocky aesthetic of the world. Ida is the star of Monument Valley.
  • A Crow:

    • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
    • Traits: The Storyteller runs on a variation of the Monument Valley-themed world described above. Instead of the reddish/pink hue, his world is grayish/blue and contains less detail. For instance, the trains in Ida’s world have a geometric pattern on them, while The Storyteller’s trains are flat, gray boxes. There are also no crows in The Storyteller’s world. He is silent, and also a character from Monument Valley.

    • Traits: Shooty Cat runs on a Shooty Skies-themed variation of the standard daytime map. His version of the world is littered with debris from aerial dogfights which are still going on during your run. Shooty Cat starts next to a downed airplane, indicating he was shot down from his game and must now huff it on foot. While running, a dogfight will occasionally occur overhead, with enemies and characters from Shooty Skies flying past and raining bullets on one another. Shooty Cat is a cat in an aviator helmet, silk scarf, and bomber jacket. He occasionally lets out a variety of “meow”s while running. He is the star of the game Shooty Skies.

  • Traits: Birthday Kid runs on the standard daytime road, but with groups of balloons and fireworks poppers dotting the landscape. When she gets near the balloons, they float away; when she’s near the fireworks, they pop into the air and explode into confetti, similar to the fireworks in the Chinese New Year map. Birthday Kid “raises the roof” while standing still and flails her arms while jumping. She has a party horn that she blows while jumping, occasionally making the “bwee-ooo” sound. As of November 20th, Crossy Road turned one year old, so Birthday Kid is an appropriate celebration.
  • Grablin:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Grablin

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Grablin
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
  • Traits:Grablin runs on the Halloween-themed map, minus the jack-o-lanterns. The grass is orangey-yellow, the trees are bare, and the lighting is dusk-like. At the top of the screen during Grablin’s run, different Crossy Road characters appear as if they are an enemy in an RPG: they will have their name, level, and HP bar visible. Every time you jump, it reduces their HP bar, until it is depleted and they are replaced by another character. The sound of “attacking” the characters while jumping makes a harsh smacking noise. Grablin is a crossover from the game Clicker Heroes. He is used to unlock Purple Bloop.

    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Mummy

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Mummy

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.3, Halloween update, October 20th, 2015.
    • How to get: Can be won via gacha.

  • Scaredy Cat:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_ScaredyCat

    CrossyRoad_InAction_ScaredyCat

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.3, Halloween update, October 20th, 2015.
    • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
    • Traits: Scaredy Cat runs on the Halloween-themed world described above. He looks like an arched-back variation on Unlucky Cat, but with yellow eyes, a darker undercoat, and a tail that sticks up instead of down. Scaredy Cat swings his legs while jumping, although it’s difficult to see as he often blends in with the dark background and shadows. He makes noises while jumping that are a cross between a hiss and a yowl.

Special Characters – Holiday/Christmas Themed

All of the following characters change the world to a Christmas/winter theme. This includes: snow on the ground and trees, colorful piles of presents dotting the landscape, and blocks of ice instead of logs floating in the rivers.

      CrossyRoad_InAction_Snowman
    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
    • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
    • Traits: Snowman runs on the Holiday-themed world described above. When jumping, Snowman’s hat pops off his body and his arms flail to the left and right. He leaves a flurry of snow behind him while running. Snowman makes a high-pitched “whee” sound that is almost kazoo-like.
    • Elf:
CrossyRoad_Portrait_Elf

CrossyRoad_InAction_Elf

  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
  • Traits: Elf runs on the Holiday-themed world described above. When jumping, Elf’s arms swing back and forth, similar to Runner or Hurdler. He is smaller than the other characters, about the same size as Leprechaun. He makes a trill gargling sound and occasionally giggles softly.
  • Pudding:

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Pudding
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
  • Traits: Pudding runs on the Holiday-themed world described above. It appears to be a form of figgy pudding, complete with mistletoe garinsh. Pudding makes a wet, flapping sound while jumping, just like Hipster Whale or Floppy Fish and a farting noise upon dying.
  • Reindeer:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Reindeer

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Reindeer
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.

    CrossyRoad_Portrait_TioDeNadal

    CrossyRoad_InAction_TioDeNadal
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Can be won via gacha.
  • Traits: Tió De Nadal runs on the Holiday-themed world described above. It is a Christmas log and a part of Catalonian holiday tradition: during the weeks leading up to Christmas, the log is given a face, wrapped in a blanket, and eventually beaten with a stick until it “poops” out presents. Thus, in Crossy Road, Tió De Nadal is a log draped in a blanket that makes a farting noise while jumping and farts out confetti and small gifts. Upon death, it gives out one final gift-giving toot.

Unlockable Characters

These characters are not available in the gacha lottery; they can only be earned through special means. The way to earn each character is detailed below. These characters may or may not change the appearance of the world around them, which is covered in their “Traits.”

  • Festive Chicken:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_FestiveChicken

    CrossyRoad_InAction_FestiveChicken

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.0, Christmas theme, Dec. 7th, 2014.
    • How to get: Festive Chicken was a special free character during the Christmas season, but now costs 99 cents like the rest of the characters. She can also be won via gacha. Update: she is currently free again for the 2015 holiday season.
    • Traits: Like Penguin, Festive Chicken changes the world to winter with snow covering the ground and snowmen dotting the landscape. There are also pine trees in addition to the standard ones, and snowflakes flutter around as well. Visually herself, Festive Chicken looks just like standard Chicken except with a Santa hat on.
  • Fortune Chicken:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_FortuneChicken

    CrossyRoad_InAction_FortuneChicken

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.19, Chinese New Year theme, Feb. 2nd, 2015.
    • How to get: Fortune Chicken was previously free in the in-game store for the Chinese New Year. She now costs 99 cents to buy, or can be won via the gacha.
    • Traits: Fortune Chicken makes a number of visual changes to the world: it becomes winter and snow-covered, a number of colorful plants appear alongside trees, there are pagodas that you can walk underneath, fireworks dot the landscape and are set off when you walk nearby, red lanterns float in the sky, and red envelopes appear occasionally along the ground. Personally, Fortune Chicken herself looks and plays just like the standard Chicken, except for her red and yellow outfit.
  • Hipster Whale:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_HipsterWhale

    CrossyRoad_InAction_HipsterWhale

    • Release date: Original cast, Nov. 20th, 2014.
    • How to get: To unlock Hipster Whale: play as any standard character. (Australian characters work, too.) You will sometimes see a blue blob with a brown square float by in a river alongside the usual logs. This is the Hipster Whale. You need to jump on him, like you would a log. At the end of the run in which you jumped on him, he will be unlocked.
    • Traits: Hipster Whale takes pictures while jumping, giving off a slight flash and the sound of the camera shutter. His jumps are wet and flappy-sounding, like Floppy Fish.
  • Gifty:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Gifty

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Gifty

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.0, Christmas theme, Dec. 7th, 2014.
    • How to get: To unlock Gifty: play as Festive Chicken. At a certain point (usually between 70-100 points), you’ll enter a large clearing. In the middle of the clearing is a giant Christmas tree. Run up next to the tree and it should explode with presents and coins. After this event, you can move on and at the end of your run, Gifty will be unlocked.
    • Traits: Visually, Gifty is just a chicken in a gift box: you can see her feet sticking out the bottom. Gifty plays on the standard grassy map and makes a soft rustling sound while jumping. When she dies, confetti flies out of her.
  • Crab:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Crab

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Crab

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.15, Australia Day theme, Jan. 17th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Crab: play as any of the Australian characters (Kangaroo, Platypus, Echidna, etc.). [Update: A reader has informed us that the Crab can be unlocked while playing as any character, not just the Australian-themed ones. Thanks for the tip!] On the sandy median areas, swipe back and forth so you’re moving left and right instead of backward or forward. (Essentially, shuffling sideways like a crab.) You’ll need to swipe back and forth over 100 times in a single run to unlock the Crab, so it’s best to just do it a few times every time you come to a median. If you stay in one lane too long, the eagle comes, so limit your swipes to 5-10 times per lane. We unlocked the Crab after swiping somewhere between 130-150 times in one run, so aim for at least that many. After you die, if you swiped enough, you’ll receive the Crab.
    • Traits: Visually, Crab runs on the standard grass map. His forward movement is sideways while looking back over his shoulder. He lifts his pinchers with each jump and makes a satisfying clicking sound.
  • Drop Bear:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_DropBear

    CrossyRoad_InAction_DropBear

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.15, Australia Day theme, Jan. 17th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Drop Bear: play as any of the Australian characters (Kangaroo, Platypus, Echidna, etc.). The Drop Bear is a part of their environment and, like the Hipster Whale, will show up randomly. He perches at the top of the tall, green trees. If you come within two squares of him, he will jump off his tree and onto your character: this kills your character and ends the run, but unlocks Drop Bear. Even after you unlock the Drop Bear, he will still show up in the Australian characters’ worlds, so avoid him afterwards.
    • Traits: Drop Bear runs in the Outback world. He is a slightly darker-furred koala and makes a similar, although lower-pitched and more menacing, growl.
  • Cai Shen:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_CaiShen

    CrossyRoad_InAction_CaiShen

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.19, Chinese New Year theme, Feb. 2nd, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Cai Shen: play as Fortune Chicken or Xi. You need to pick up the red envelopes scattered along the ground. You’ll need to collect a total of 21 red envelopes to unlock Cai Shen. However, unlike most other requirements, these envelopes are cumulative and can be collected over multiple runs: if you play five times and collect five envelopes each time, you’ll unlock him after the fifth run.
    • Traits: Cai Shen runs in the same world as Fortune Chicken and shouts things in Chinese as he runs. Fun fact: Cai Shen is the Chinese god of wealth and the red envelopes you use to collect him are traditionally used to present monetary gifts.
  • Michael Boom:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_MichaelBoom

    CrossyRoad_InAction_MichaelBoom

    • Release date: Added in update 1.2.2, Micro update, May 20th, 2015.
    • How to get: Play as any character on a standard-themed map (normal, Australian, UK/Ireland, etc.) While running, you will occasionally see a green truck carrying a large rocket. You need to run into this rocket truck, which will cause a massive explosion. Note: you cannot be run over the truck from front or back. You must run into it from the side to cause the explosion and unlock Michael Boom. The truck’s appearance is random, similar to Hipster Whale or Nessie, but it can appear as early as the first road in the game. Because of this, if you’re hunting for the truck, it might be easier to continually die and check the first section of roads for it. After you cause the explosion and die, Michael Boom will be unlocked.
    • Traits: Michael Boom runs on a slight variation of the normal daytime road. There is a sunburst in the upper right corner making everything a bit brighter. Major explosions will randomly occur and the shadows of jet fighter planes fly overhead. The intro screen when playing as Michael Boom is stylized as a film title: “Hipster Whale Presents a Michael Boom Film: Crossy Road.”
  • Jughead:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Jughead

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Jughead

    • Release date: Added in update 1.2.2, Micro update, May 20th, 2015.
    • How to get: Play as Archie. You need to pick up the hamburgers/cheeseburgers scattered around his world. Pick up 50 burgers total to unlock Jughead. The burgers will accumulate over multiple runs, so you can get a few each time and eventually unlock him.
    • Traits: Similar to Archie, Jughead runs on the standard map with interactive mailboxes, but no hamburgers. When he dies, he grows into a giant, hatless Jughead. He is a guest star from Archie Riverdale Rescue. Note: In a recent update, Jughead’s name was changed to “Ace.”
  • Rugby Player:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_RugbyPlayer

    CrossyRoad_InAction_RugbyPlayer

    • Release date: Added in update 1.2.2, Micro update, May 20th, 2015.
    • How to get: The exact method to unlock Rugby Player is currently unknown. Many theories have been presented, but the one we used successfully was as follows: play as the Squirrel. Collect acorns along your run (the predominant theory is four, but we collected seven before seeing any results). At some point, you should see a tiny, white rugby ball on top of a tree. Run into this tree from any direction to knock the rugby ball off. After this and once you die, you will unlock Rugby Player. Note: It’s possible and likely that any UK/Ireland-themed character can be used to find the rugby ball and unlock Rugby Player. However, players seem to be having the most luck with the Squirrel strategy.
    • Traits: Rugby Player runs on the UK/Ireland-themed world. When running, yellow flowers (or possibly penalty cards / goal posts?) sprout behind him. He grunts while hopping. When he dies, his rugby ball flies off, similar to Baller.
    • The following three secret characters are the developers of Crossy Road. To unlock them, you have to play as each developer’s favorite character and earn a “Great” score. A “Great” score either tops your current high score, or comes extremely close. As of the April update, a “Great” score has to be at least 80% of your high score. So, we were able to unlock Andy Sum by getting a score of 355 with the Mallard when our high score is 421. Only a score of 50 or above will count as “Great,” however, even if your current high score is lower. So, as an example: if your high score is 50, a score of 50 will be considered “Great.” If your high score is 400, a high score of 320 will be “Great.” Unfortunately, since “Great” scores are entirely dependent upon your personal best, if you have an extremely high top score, earning the developers will be very challenging. Try our

tips guide

for help on beating your high score.

  • Andy Sum:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_AndySum

    CrossyRoad_InAction_AndySum

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.15, Australia Day theme, Jan. 17th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Andy Sum: play as the Mallard and earn a “Great” score (see explanation above).
    • Traits: Andy Sum twirls and spins as he jumps, and a red trail follows him in similar fashion to the Unihorse’s.
  • Ben Weatherall:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_BenWeatherall
    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.15, Australia Day theme, Jan. 17th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Ben Weatherall: play as The Dark Lord and earn a “Great” score (see explanation above).
    • Traits: Ben Weatherall plays on the standard map but populated by colorful, floating voxels.
  • Matt Hall:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_MattHall

    CrossyRoad_InAction_MattHall

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.15, Australia Day theme, Jan. 17th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Matt Hall: play as the Lucky Cat and earn a “Great” score (see explanation above).
    • Traits: Matt Hall runs in a light rain shower. His map is populated with sheep and kangaroos that watch as you pass. If you stand next to the sheep, they will shake in…fear? Joy? We’re not sure how the sheep feel about Matt.
  • Piggy Bank:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_PiggyBank

    CrossyRoad_InAction_PiggyBank

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.0, Christmas theme, Dec. 7th, 2014.
    • How to get: To unlock: you have to purchase the Piggy Bank in the in-game store for $3.99. You cannot win it or unlock it in any other way.
    • Traits: The Piggy Bank adds red coins to every playthrough that are worth five gold apiece, in addition to the standard yellow coins worth one gold. These red coins will be present no matter which character you use: you don’t have to play as the Piggy Bank to collect them, you only have to have him unlocked. Having the Piggy Bank also makes every video ad you watch worth 40 coins instead of 20. The Piggy Bank runs on the standard grassy map. When he jumps, coins fly out of the coin slot on his back. He occasionally snorts softly, but mostly makes the jangly noise of raining coins.
  • Phone Box:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_PhoneBox

    CrossyRoad_InAction_PhoneBox

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.21, UK/Ireland update, April 1st, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play with any of the UK/Ireland characters and reach about score 100. This varies, and you may not receive the option to win the Phone Box on every playthrough. Around this point, if Phone Box is available, you should enter a large grass clearing with the Phone Box in the middle of it. It will be ringing. Stand near the Phone Box for a few seconds until it stops ringing and turns to a dial tone, then move on. (Nothing visually happens, but you should still unlock it.) This is similar to how you unlock Gifty from the Christmas update.
    • Traits: Phone Box runs on the UK/Ireland-themed world described above. It is a red version of the Tardis from Doctor Who. It makes a heavy, mechanical thumping sound on each jump and the sound of a phone ringing comes from it every few seconds.
  • Nessy:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Nessy

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Nessy

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.21, UK/Ireland update, April 1st, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play as any of the UK/Ireland-world characters. Nessy will be found randomly floating alongside the logs in a river, just like Hipster Whale. And, like Hipster Whale, to unlock her you need to jump on her back when she floats past. If you make it onto her back and die (she swims offscreen with you), you will still unlock her. You do not need to reach any specific score: she can be found at any river point in the level, but her appearance is random.
    • Traits: Nessy runs on the UK/Ireland-themed world described above. She makes a wet, flapping sound like Hipster Whale and Floppy Fish, with droplets of water splashing off her. She uses her long neck to check for traffic by turning her head left and right. She emits a low, growly groan every once in awhile.
  • Leprechaun:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Leprechaun

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Leprechaun

    • Release date: Added in update 1.1.21, UK/Ireland update, April 1st, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play with any of the UK/Ireland characters and pick up the tiny, green clovers that dot the map. Most of these are normal clovers, but you’ll occasionally come across a slightly larger, four-leaf version. The four-leaf clover will make a soft “ding!” sound when picked up, while the regular version just sounds like a leaf rustling. Pick up one four-leaf clover to unlock the Leprechaun.
    • Traits: Leprechaun runs on the UK/Ireland-themed world described above. He is a tiny character, about 1/3 the size of other humanesque avatars, similar to Schoolgirl. On his runs, coins are highlighted with shiny bubbles floating above them, and they will bounce up and down. Rainbow arches also appear randomly on his stage. Leprechaun makes mumbly gibberish noises similar to Crazy Ol’ Ben.
  • Pro Gamer:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_ProGamer
    CrossyRoad_InAction_ProGamer
    • Release date: Added in update 1.2.5, Korean Update, June 25th, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock Pro Gamer: play as any of the Korean-themed characters. You need to play quickly, with frequent taps: your goal is to get a high “actions per minute” score during your run. The main goal is to not stand still for very long—you can swipe side to side and these will count towards your “actions” total. Anytime you are interacting with the screen you are performing an “action.” Get a normal score over 100, and a high enough “actions per minute” score (which is invisible, you just have to tap frequently enough) and you’ll unlock Pro Gamer.
    • Traits: Pro Gamer runs on the Korean-themed world. He has a running timer under your normal score of “APM” (actions per minute). This is here just for fun (currently). The sound of a crowd cheering accompanies his run and an announcer commentates on your progress in Korean. Sometimes a swarm of pink, six-legged platypi run past on the road (a stand-in for the zerg?).
  • Psy:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Psy
    CrossyRoad_InAction_Psy
    • Release date: Added in update 1.2.5, Korean Update, June 25th, 2015.
    • How to get: Psy is only available as an in-app purchase with real money, for $2.99. He will supposedly only be available to purchase for a limited time, until September 25th—and not available at all after that date. You earn an automatic 1,000 in-game gold for purchasing Psy.
    • Traits: Psy runs on the Korean-themed world. He introduces a new “dance” game mode which is separate from the other characters: your high score as Psy is unique to him and unrelated to your main Crossy Road top score. Psy’s map features a black dance path that lights up in blue, yellow, and purple squares. As you run along this path, you will get exponentially greater bonus points added to your total for each second you stay on the path: after 2 seconds, 2 points are added to your total, after 10 seconds, 10 points are added, etc. These points pop up over Psy as they are earned. If you step off the black path at any time, your bonus tally will reset back to 1 and will rebuild as you stay on the black path again. If you are on the dance path, Psy will perform moves from his signature Gangnam Style music video as he runs, a chiptunes variation of the song plays in the background, and explosions occur around him. If you step off the path, the dance moves and song stop. There are paparazzi and Psy fans scattered around the map, taking pictures and dancing along. Psy shouts a number of things while running, including “Let’s gooo” and “Crossy Road!” while running. Note that Psy does not apply towards the total character count: without Psy you can still have 104/104 characters.
  • Pac-Man:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_PacMan

    CrossyRoad_InAction_PacMan

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.1, Pac-Man update, August 22nd, 2015.
    • How to get: Pac-Man is only available as an in-app purchase, although he is free to download. To acquire Pac-Man, enter the character menu and scroll all the way to the far right. Tap on Pac-Man and the info button; there should be a download button here.
    • Traits: Pac-Man runs on the Pac-Man-themed world. Pac-Man’s world is black with neon outlines that change color, just like Pac-Chicken and the ghosts. However, instead of cars, the four ghosts patrol his roads. Like Psy, Pac-Man introduces an entirely new game mode with its own separate leaderboard. To earn points, you have to eat the white pellets that dot the ground—one point each—or eat ghosts after ingesting a larger, white power pellet—five points per ghost. Pac-Man does not earn any points for distance, only for eating. If he stands still for too long, the 256 glitch captures him instead of the eagle. This is a reference to the glitch from the original game as well as Hipster Whale’s new title, Pac-Man 256. Pac-Man makes his classic “waka waka” sound while eating, “wah-wah-wah-wah” upon dying, and chases ghosts to the original “chnchnchnchn” alert.
  • Blinky:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Blinky

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Blinky

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.1, Pac-Man update, August 22nd, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play as Pac-Chicken. While running, you will occasionally see a “cop car” as found in the other maps—a car that moves extremely fast across the screen and flashes red and blue. While playing as Pac-Chicken or the four ghosts, however, this “cop car” will be Pac-Man. You need to get hit (killed) by the Pac-Man car to unlock Blinky. This is really just random luck, but your best bet of doing so is to cross roads slowly: when you come up to a road, especially a multi-lane highway, wait a few seconds for the normal cars to pass and to see if a Pac-Man car appears.
    • Traits: Blinky runs on the Pac-Man-themed world, like Pac-Chicken, except without the white pellets. All of the ghosts have the same traits while running: their ghostly tendrils twitch even when standing still, their eyes follow the direction you swipe and run away once they die, and they make a “fwoo whoo” sound while jumping. Blinky is the red ghost.
  • Pinky:
    CrossyRoad_InAction_PacManUpdate

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Pinky

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.1, Pac-Man update, August 22nd, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play as Pac-Chicken. Collect the white pellets scattered around the map until you come across a cherry, like the power-up from the original Pac-Man. Eat the cherry and after you die, you’ll unlock Pinky. Note: the cherry’s appearance seems to be random, but we didn’t start seeing it appear until we’d collected about 120 pellets as Pac-Chicken (cumulatively, over many runs).
    • Traits: Pinky runs on the Pac-Man-themed world, like Pac-Chicken, except without the white pellets. All of the ghosts have the same traits while running: their ghostly tendrils twitch even when standing still, their eyes follow the direction you swipe and run away once they die, and they make a “fwoo whoo” sound while jumping. Pinky is the pink ghost.
  • Inky:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Inky

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Inky

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.1, Pac-Man update, August 22nd, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play as Pac-Man. There have been a number of theories on how to get Inky, and many of them did not work for us. One was that you need to eat a total of 50 power pellets, but we ate a total of 120 and he did not unlock. Another involved dying to Inky specifically, but we’ve unlocked him twice after dying to other means—Blinky and a river. The theory that seems most accurate at this point belongs to YouTube user BitStern. He claims that you have to get a score of 50 or better while playing Pac-Man, and do this about 30 times. This means getting to 50+ points, dying, and then doing it again. It’s also possible that you just have to earn a cumulative total of points or pellets (large or small) while playing as Pac-Man. Both times we’ve unlocked him was after playing as Pac-Man many, many times, so it seems like if you just keep at it and keep earning points as Pac-Man, you’ll eventually get him. We’ll update this guide if we figure out any more specific details on unlocking Inky or if any of our readers share how they managed to get him.
    • Traits: Inky runs on the Pac-Man-themed world, like Pac-Chicken, except without the white pellets. All of the ghosts have the same traits while running: their ghostly tendrils twitch even when standing still, their eyes follow the direction you swipe and run away once they die, and they make a “fwoo whoo” sound while jumping. Inky is the blue ghost.
  • Clyde:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Clyde

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Clyde

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.1, Pac-Man update, August 22nd, 2015.
    • How to get: To unlock: play as Pac-Man. You need to eat a total of seven ghosts in a single powered-up state. This means: eat a large, white power pellet to turn the ghosts blue. Then eat seven of them before they revert back to their original colors. If they revert back before you eat seven, you’ll have to start over at zero ghosts. However, you can eat another power pellet to extend the powered-up state and the chain will continue. So, if you eat a power pellet, eat four ghosts, then eat a second power pellet while they’re still blue and eat three more, that will count as seven on a single pellet. Once you’ve eaten seven ghosts in a row like this and die, you’ll unlock Clyde.
    • Traits: Clyde runs on the Pac-Man-themed world, like Pac-Chicken, except without the white pellets. All of the ghosts have the same traits while running: their ghostly tendrils twitch even when standing still, their eyes follow the direction you swipe and run away once they die, and they make a “fwoo whoo” sound while jumping. Clyde is the orange ghost.
  • The Totem:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_TheTotem

    CrossyRoad_InAction_TheTotem

    • Release date: Added in update 1.3.2, Indie games update, October 4th, 2015.
    • How to get: Play as any of the Monument Valley characters: Ida, A Crow, or The Storyteller. The Totem is unlocked just like Hipster Whale or Nessy: while running on the Monument Valley-themed world, he will randomly appear floating in the river. To unlock him, you just need to jump on his head. After doing so, and dying, The Totem will be unlocked.
    • Traits:The Totem runs on the Monument Valley-themed world described in Ida’s profile. Instead of hopping, The Totem slides across the ground. If he stands still for a couple of seconds, he will jump slightly, separating his different body segments. When killed, he splits into four separate pieces. Totem is silent while sliding. He is a beloved character from Monument Valley.
  • Yeti:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_Yeti

    CrossyRoad_InAction_Yeti
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Play as any of the Holiday/Christmas-themed characters listed above. While running, you will occasionally come across the Yeti in the map. He will be throwing snowballs in one direction. You need to stand between the Yeti and his snowball direction and get hit by one; this will kill you, and upon your death, you will unlock Yeti. For a look at the Yeti in action in-map, YouTube user CraniumCode has a good video here. Like Hipster Whale or Nessie, Yeti shows up randomly, so if you are having trouble finding him, just keep playing. Tip: we recommend playing with the sound on while searching for Yeti. You will be able to hear him throwing snowballs from about 10 jumps away, even before he is visible onscreen. His throwing sounds like a bird’s wings flapping and will occur every couple seconds. If you touch Yeti, you will not die, and you can jump through him if need be to get into his snowball trajectory.
  • Traits:Yeti runs on the Holiday-themed map described above. His legs swing back and forth while running, and he raises his arms up together while jumping, almost like Zombie. He will occasionally throw snowballs that will cover cars in snow if they are hit (but this does not stop the car or prevent it from running you over). He is one of the largest characters in the game and makes soft, grunty breaths.
  • Purple Bloop:
    CrossyRoad_Portrait_PurpleBloop

    CrossyRoad_InAction_PurpleBloop
  • Release date: Added in update 1.3.6, Holiday update, December 12th, 2015.
  • How to get: Play as Grablin. You need to “kill” a certain number of the enemy Crossy Road characters that appear. This is done simply by hopping; however, every jump—whether it moves you forward or not—counts as a “hit” on the enemy character. Because of this, jumping back and forth on a single lane or running into a tree over and over are the best strategy to get enough kills to unlock Purple Bloop. As you kill characters, you’ll face higher level challengers. By the time you defeat a character that is level 36 or above, you should have enough jumps for the unlock. Upon dying on a run after you’ve defeated at least a level 36 character, you should get Purple Bloop. Credit to YouTube user BitStern for both the requirement and strategy for this unlock.
  • Traits:Purple Bloop runs on the Halloween-themed map, minus the jack-o-lanterns, just like Grablin. He has the same enemy RPG window at the top of the screen. Purple Bloop is a crossover from the game Clicker Heroes.

Special Characters – Brazil Themed

All of the following characters change the world to a Brazilian theme. This includes: a bustling cityscape with colorful skyscrapers; potted palm trees; mosaic black-and-white sidewalks; wooden utility poles; yellow trains; lighter-colored logs in the rivers; sandy beach lanes interspersed with roads; and cargo trucks carrying large speakers that play music as they pass. The river creature in Brazil is Hipster Whale. Also note: in this update, the order of characters on the character select screen has been rearranged significantly. The original set of characters is on the far right end of the list now, while newer characters (including the Brazil additions) are towards the beginning.

Jillian will play any game with cute characters or an isometric perspective, but her favorites are Fallout 3, Secret of Mana, and Harvest Moon. Her PC suffers from permanent cat-on-keyboard syndrome, which she blames for most deaths in Don’t Starve. She occasionally stops gaming long enough to eat waffles and rewatch Battlestar Galactica.
