Kobojo, probably best known for Mutants: Genetic Gladiators and a legal battle with Zynga, have just announced their next project: the mobile RPG Zodiac.

It’s a title coming with a huge pedigree, especially for fans of the Final Fantasy series. Scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, who has helped work on Final Fantasy VII, the Final Fantasy XIII universe, and wrote most of the Kingdom Hearts games, is writing for Zodiac. Hitoshi Sakamoto is a prolific Japanese composer whose work with the Final Fantasy series encompasses Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy XII, along with a large number of other Japanese games and movies.

This isn’t a bad pair of names to have attached to your up-and-coming RPG.

In the bigger picture, the development team is an international one, including these Japanese members (plus Sakimoto’s Basiscape company creating the audio and sound effects), the French home of Kobojo, and the Scotland-based Kobojo studio primarily developing the game.

As for the game itself, Zodiac will be a 2D persistent online RPG, where players fly on the backs of winged beasts to explore the world, fighting battles with their party against enemies. There’s detailed hand-drawn animation filling out the world and its characters.

The game, which is being made in Unity according to the Kobojo web page, is confirmed for iOS along with the Playstation Vita, but given Kobojo’s history of multiplatform development, it’s possible the game could hit more than just those platforms.

If your a fan of RPG’s, Zodiac is definitely a game to keep an eye on.
