You work hard. You work hard all year. And once every September, America celebrates this fact by giving you a much deserved Monday off. But since you’re usually chained to your desk/operating table/cash register/bat pole/fire truck, there’s a good chance that you don’t know what to do with your free time.
Don’t worry – we’re here to help you ease into it.
Like Labor Day itself, the following 7 games celebrate the day-to-day life of the working stiff (aka you). Some are about working low paying jobs that barely pay the rent, some are about six-figure salaries that could easily score you a Lexus, and some are about living the dream regardless of what you fill out on your 1040.
I Get This Call Every Day – Have you ever wondered what life is like on the other end of the phone when you call a service provider or government office? This quick, quirky, and dead-on (trust me, I’ve worked in them) depiction of life in a call center will give you the full experience. (Plus the guy who made it lost his job because of the game, so throw him a few shekels and pick it up!)
Cook, Serve, Delicious! – Want to learn a crazy statistic today? Restaurants in America employ more than 13 million people. That’s one in every 24 Americans. I guess that explains the smorgasbord of great cooking games – and Cook, Serve, Delicious! is one of the tastiest of them all.
Cart Life – Here’s a less than fun fact to have rubbed in your face on Labor Day: the system is kind of rigged to keep you exactly where you are. You wake up, go to work, pay the bills, sleep, and repeat. This “retail simulation” about becoming a street vendor is a sobering reminder of that fact. HAVE A NICE DAY!
Game Dev Story – A game about making games? I CALL INCEPTION! Live the life of a game developer, fine tuning your strategy as you try to turn your studio into the next <insert your favorite game maker here>.
Crazy Taxi – The freedom of the open road. The excitement of hustling to be the first to snag a big fare. Meeting new and interesting people. Soaring 50 feet in the air in a yellow cab after you launch it off a wicked ramp. Isn’t taxi life grand?
Surgeon Simulator 2013 – After 364 days of surgery, you’re bound to get shaky hands. That’s no good, doc. Take Labor Day off and forget about the operating table by …playing this game about performing surgeries with shaky hands on the operating table. (Also see Amateur Surgeon 3)
Devil’s Attorney – You might think that being a lawyer is all about getting justice and upholding the law. Ideals are great and all, but they don’t pay the bills. Besides, bad guys need legal representation too. Show the world your legal chops, and then phone your mom and tell her she was wrong – you totally could have been a lawyer if they’d offered the right classes at community college.
