“Warband” would be a pretty sweet name for a band.

Whether or not you’ve actually sat down and played it, you’re surely familiar with Dungeons & Dragons. It’s one of those rare games that made the leap over to pop culture phenomenon, even inspiring a god-awful film back in 2001. It’s also been adapted into myriad video games, many of which deviate significantly from what the original game was all about. The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Warbands certainly strays away a bit, but it also stays true to its RPG roots.

Dungeons & Dragons: Warbands

Warbands is best described as a turn-based RPG, with players taking control of their own personal “Warband” of characters.  Assembling the best possible group is key to winning, and you’ll have over 100 different units to choose from. Once you’ve chosen, it’s off to the battlefield (of which there’s six), where you and your opponent will wage an all-out war.

Typical of turn-based games, strategy is crucial in Warbands. It doesn’t matter how good an army you’ve assembled if you’re not using them to their full potential. As a matter of fact, you won’t even have access to the best characters at the start of the game. So much for your strategy of just barging through every battle with invincible heroes, huh? You’ll have to take some time to adjust to the gameplay and work on your skills, instead. On the plus side, the single-player mode should be a good place to sharpen up before taking on any real people.
