Game Introduction: Gateways

Gateways is a puzzle platformer created by Smudged Cat Games.  Gamezebo’s walkthrough will provide you with detailed images, tips, information, and hints on how to finish the game.

Getting Started

Welcome to Gateways.  This game will melt your brain.  It will challenge any foolish preconceptions you may hold about space, time, gravity, and your ability to solve puzzles.  Hopefully this walkthrough will help you maintain a vestige of your sanity.  Let’s begin.

Chapter 1 – The First Leg

Get the gateway gun!

After spawning, you’ll be told how to move and jump.  These are important skills to master, as Gateways is first and foremost and platformer.  You can’t do any platforming without knowing how to jump.

Now, to get to the first puzzle.  Press M to bring up your map.  You’ll notice a big red arrow bobbing in the unexplored blackness to your right.  That’s where you’re headed.

Move right.  Hop across the platforms and grab the power orbs, they’ll come in handy.  An elevator will lift you up — watch out for the glass shards, they hurt.  Once up, watch out for the monkoids.  They hurt too.  Jump on their glass domes to kill them.  Progress right across the elevators and platforms.  You’ll see your fist puzzle.

Note the help point.  You can trade five power orbs to see if you can solve the puzzle with your current gear.  40 orbs will buy you the solution.  As you can see, this puzzle is not solvable yet, so head down the elevator below.

Here you will come across the first save point.  Saving is good.  When you die you’ll be returned to your previous save.  Ignore the help point below and keep moving left.  In the middle of this corridor you will notice an invincible monkoid.  You can still safely bounce off its head.  Hop on the switch and pass through the door at the end of the hallway.  Use the elevator to jump onto the first ledge on the left.

Behold, the gateway gun.  Right mouse click will open one portal, left mouse will open a second.  You’ll need to pass through these portals to solve puzzles.  Portals can not be opened on red/gray checkered walls.  Use the gateway gun to get yourself out of this room (open a portal on the ceiling in the upper right and another on the floor or wall).  Ride the elevator to the top of the shaft and it’s time to deal with your first proper puzzle.

1.1 A gap too far

To cross this corridor of glass, fire a portal at the far wall to the left.  Hold the R button to look where you’re aiming.  Open another portal below your feet, fall through it and step on the button to open the door.  Congratulations.  You’ve solved your first puzzle.

1.2 Laser switch

Head to your next objective.  Follow the red arrow on the map.  You’ll need to use the gateway gun to get up to it.   When you do, you’ll pass through a gateway barrier.  Notice how your open portals will close when you pass through it.  Keep moving left… see how that laser opens the door when it hits the target on the floor?  That’s important.

Past that door is your next puzzle.  Open a portal where the laser hits the floor, then open a second portal across from the target.  When the laser hits the target the door will open for you.

Remember, if your portals start getting all mixed up, press C to cancel them and start fresh.

1.3 A matter of timing

Head left and hop on the elevator going down, again towards the red arrow on your map.  Upon grabbing the power orb to the left, you’ll learn you can fire portals through the blue side of doors if you ever get stuck.  Head right to the next puzzle.

Here you want to open a portal on the ceiling of the lower corridor, right next to the door you want to pass through.  Hop up to the upper corridor and stand on the button — the door will remain open below for a few seconds.  Step through the portal and be on your way.

1.4 Fast door

Immediately afterwards you’ll find another simple puzzle.  Step on the button, open the door, fire a portal at the wall and another on the floor next to you.  Pass through.  Avoid the monkoid, grab the power orbs and don’t forget to hit the save point on the way down to your next objective.

1.5 Through the keyhole

Head down the elevator and get off at the first ledge on your right.  This next puzzle will get you a few power orbs, but is a dead end until you get more gear.  Stand on the help point and open a portal on the wall across the way.  Place another one next to you, step through, grab the orbs and head back again.

1.6 Laser above

Walk right towards your next objective (again, the red arrow on the in-game map).  This next puzzle requires you to open a portal with your left mouse button where the laser hits the floor.  Then open your right-click portal on the ceiling above the ledge.  Pass through, stand on the button, open the door in front of you, and then reposition your right-click portal on the newly exposed wall.  This will open the door below.  Proceed.

 

1.7 Long Distance Laser

Time for a change of scenery.  Jump down the pit on the other side of the door and head to your next objective.  Save at the bottom and go right.  The four buttons on the floor must be stepped on in the correct order to turn on all the lights above.  This will open the door ahead.  To be honest, I just hopped around until the door opened, so I’m sure you can do the same.  Nothing mind-bending here.  Move on to the real puzzle.

In front of the door you’ll see another laser target.  Head back to the shaft that you dropped down to get into this underground area.  Teleport yourself back up the shaft and open a left-click portal where the laser hits the floor.  Drop down the shaft and head back to the laser target on the ceiling by the door.  Open a right-click portal on the floor beneath it and pass on through.

1.8 Monkey Block

Immediately to the right is the next puzzle.  Just open a portal above the monkoids and drop on their heads.

Let there be light!

Head down the shaft.  Notice that a portal opens to your left.  This portal allows you to travel quickly back to the center of the map.  It will remain open forever.  To your right you will find the torch — or flashlight for our American readers.  Turn the light on by pressing E and aim it at the receptor in the upper left hand corner of the room.  The door will open.  Ride the elevator back up the shaft and head left towards your next objective.

1.9 Shed some light

This is an easy one.  The light receptor is just above the door.  Point the torch at it and move along towards the next objective.

1.10 Multi switch

Head up and towards the left.  It’s dark here so you might want to keep your torch lit.  Portal to the other side of the hallway covered in glass.  Once across, use the torch to activate all the light receptors in the room.  Be quick though… once you turn them on it’s only a matter of time until the door shuts again.  Proceed down and towards the left for a new toy.

Retrieve the resizing gateway gun!

Congratulations.  You have acquired the gateway resizing gun.  The left mouse button will place a small portal and the right button will place a large portal.  Walk through the large one and you’ll come out the other smaller than your normal size.  Walk through the small one and you’ll come out larger.  Pressing C will cancel your portals, reverting you to normal size.  In some rooms you will not be able to revert to normal size.

Shrink yourself down and step on the button to your right.  Yep, this game just got a little more complicated.

Chapter 2 – Honey I Shrunk Myself

2.1 Mini me

Head up and to the left.  Walk through the shortcut portal back to the center of the stage and make your way to the next objective.

Once there, open a small portal with the resizer on the ceiling above the help point.  Drop a large portal on the floor and hop through it.  Now that you’re eensy weensy you can proceed through the tunnel to the right.  After passing through the tunnel there is a tricky platforming section.  Remember that the R button allows you to see where you’re aiming.

2.2 Tiny laser

This next puzzle is easy.  Direct the laser at the target via a pair of resize portals, then jump through yourself.  Proceed through the tunnel towards the next objective.

2.3 The high jump

You’re going to pass a few puzzles that you can’t solve yet.  Don’t worry, you’ll get back to them.  In the meantime, you’ve got some major ground to cover before the next puzzle — just platforming stuff.  Head towards the red arrow on your map.  I believe in you…

This puzzle takes some finesse.  Stand on the help point, open one gateway on the floor to right, and another on the floor to the left.  Then jump from the help point through the left portal — be sure to hold down the jump button while you do this — and your momentum will fling you up to the ledge on the right.  Step on the button and head on through the door.

Salvage the shaving mirror!

In this room you will find the mirror.  Press Q to equip the mirror after picking it up.  Moving the mouse will rotate the mirror.  Place the mirror in the laser’s path and reflect it towards the laser target in the upper left hand corner of the room.  Waltz on out that door and head to your next objective.  It’s a hike, so get a move on.  Go to the center of the map and use the quick travel portal to get to the red arrow on your map.

Chapter 3 – Major Laser

3.1 Deflected

Stand in front of the laser on the edge of the ledge and use the mirror to aim it at the target below.  Voila.

3.2 Light the way

This is an easy one.  Hop on the platform, shine your torch at the light receptor and go for a ride.

3.3 U-bend #1

Open a portal where the laser hits the floor and another on the wall to the left of the help point.  Reflect the laser at the target on the ceiling.  Pass through the door and head to your next objective.

3.4 U-bend #2

The solution to this puzzle is the same as the first, but the opposite.  Fire lasers in the same position, but then reflect the laser into the portal on the wall up through the one on the floor.

3.5 Light from above

Teleport yourself up to the button on the ledge in the upper left corner of the room.  Open a portal where the laser hits the wall and a second portal directly above you.  Use the mirror to reflect the laser at the target behind the door.

Take the time travel gateway gun!

And now the game becomes even more complicated.  This gun allows you to travel through time and create multiple copies of yourself.  Make sure not to bump into yourself when you do, or a time paradox will send you back to where you started — a major bummer when you’re three quarters of the way through a tough puzzle.

Fire a portal at the wall.  This will cause a meter to appear.  Wait until the meter is almost full, then fire a second portal.  It connects to when you fired the first portal.  If you walk through it, the meter will then run in the opposite direction.  If you wait until your original self opens the second time portal, you can follow him through it and create another copy of yourself.

So to get out of this room, stand on the button, fire the portal, wait till the meter fills, fire a second portal, hop through it and you’ll see yourself standing on the button.  You’ll be able to pass through the door and move on to your next objective.

Chapter 4 – Time Bandit

4.1 Switch in time

Stand on the button, fire a time portal, give yourself enough time to get through the door, fire a second portal and be on your way.  Make sure not to touch yourself.

4.2 Time’s up

Stand on the button to open the door.  Fire a portal on the ceiling above the ledge, wait a bit, and open a second portal on the wall next to you.  Move along to the next puzzle.

4.3 If you hold that there…

This puzzle is a taste of things to come.  Time puzzles are tough…

Fire a time portal at the ceiling above the ledge, then reflect the laser towards the left side of the screen.  Wait till the bar is almost full and open a second time portal on the wall to your right.  Pass through it.  Hop down, reflect the laser up at the target, wait until your old self opens the second time portal again and follow him through it.  Good grief.  Now there are three of you!  Walk on through the door.

4.4 Double laser

Open a time portal on the wall to the left.  Reflect the laser at it while the time meter fills, then fire a second portal at the wall to your right.  Reflect the laser that comes out of the portal upwards towards the right hand target on the ceiling, wait a bit, then jump through the portal before the time meter runs out.  Stand on the help point and angle the laser at the left hand target on the ceiling. Wait a bit and then follow your double through the portal.  Jump from the left ledge to the right, and pass through the doorway.

Excellent, an extra echo!

This power up allows you to create yet another double of yourself with the time gateway gun.  Carry on!  Head back down towards your next objective.

4.5 Switch run

Stand on the button to open the door down below.  Fire a time portal at the wall directly to your right.  Wait until the meter almost fills, hop down and fire a second time portal at the wall on the left.  Walk through, hop up on the ledge again, wait a second, then run to the button on the lower right.  Stand there until just before your double steps off the first button.  Follow the double through the time portal, jump up on the ledge and go stand on the third button.  Before your double steps off the second button, move past the door and follow your doubles through.  Pass through the final door.  And do all of this without any of your doubles bumping into each other.  Good luck!

4.6 Careful co-ordination

To solve this puzzle, open a time portal on the ceiling above and to the right of the button that activates the elevator.  Wait a second or two, then stand on the button.  Raise the elevator to its apex.  Once there, step off of the button to the left, fire a second time portal on the floor to the right of the button, jump through, and then hop on the elevator.

Where to next?

And then we hit a wall.  To complete more puzzles, you’ll need to get some power-ups.  Above is a map that should be similar to your own.  The two red arrows on the left side of the map point to solvable puzzles that lead to power-ups.  Ignore the one on the right for now.  First, let’s head to the red arrow at the bottom of the map.

Chapter 5 – Fun with Power-Ups

5.1 Metal corridor

Return to the center of the map and use the fast travel portal to get to the underground — use the portal that sends you to the bottom right.  Then make your way to the puzzle.

This is an easy one.  Stand on the ledge on the same level as the button, fire a time portal at the wall to the lower left, and then head back to the button.  Stand on it, let the meter fill, then fire a second portal at the floor beside you.  Hop through it and run past the door.  Your reward is an extra echo — you can create yet another copy of yourself with the time portal.

5.2 Time shuffle

While you’re here, you may as well try out that new echo.  This puzzle looks tricky, but it isn’t so bad.  In relation to the help point, stand on the second button to the left.  This will open the door above you.  Fire a time portal at the bottom part of the wall to right, let the meter fill, then fire another portal at the wall to your left.  Walk through, hop on the button behind the door you just raised.  Wait until your double is about to pass back through the portal, then follow it in.  Repeat the process with the third button.  With your fourth echo pass on through the door.  Success.  You’ve reached a dead end.

After getting that extra echo, you’ll be able to complete the next puzzle in the main quest.  The red arrow will now point to the objective arrow on your map.  Lets grab some more power ups first though.  Refer back to the screenshot above.  Head to the arrow to the upper left.

5.3 Big boy

Easy one.  Use your resizer to grow big and jump on this monkey’s head.

5.4 Switch mix

Stand on the ledge next to the button, fire a time portal at the left facing wall below you.  Stand on the button and let the meter fill, then fire a second time portal at the wall to your left.  Pass through it, hop up to the laser and reflect it at the target with your mirror.  Once your past echo opens the portal, pass through it and head on through the doors to your right.  An extra echo awaits.

5.5 Room of many switches

Stand on the button to far left.  Fire a time gateway at the ceiling above the help point.  Let the bar fill, and fire a second time gate at the wall to your left.  Pass through.  Stand on the button.  Repeat this process four times with your echoes, passing through the door with your fifth.

Requisition the rotation gateway gun!

This is the final gateway gun.  It allows you to change the direction of gravity.  Put two gateways on the floor, step through, and do some ceiling walking.  Congratulations.  The game is even more complicated now!  I hope you’re happy with yourself.  Time to get more power ups.

Lets grab the one up above first.  Follow the path I’ve drawn in red on the screenshot above.  When you get to the end of the path, use the rotation gateway gun to reorient yourself, jumping ‘up’ the shaft.  

Chapter 6 – Almost There

6.1 Floor to ceiling

Time to mess around with your rotation gun.  Hop on the platform to your right.  When you reach the wall on your right, open two rotation portals on it, one on top of the other.  Pass through the bottom one when the platform reaches the wall and you will fall onto the platform above you.  Repeat this process until you make it past all that dangerous glass.  At the end of this gauntlet you will receive an extra time power up.  Your time gateway gun will have a larger time meter now.  Head to the objective arrow on the right of your map.

6.2 Door on high

This is an easy one.  Stand on the button, open a time portal to your right, let the meter fill, then open the second portal to your left.  Hop up on the ledge to your left, leap into the second portal and make sure you hold down the jump button.  Your inertia will fling you up to the ledge above, where extra time awaits you.  Now head down to the red objective arrow towards the bottom of the map.  The quickest way to get these is by heading back to the center of the map and using the fast travel portal.

6.3 Scaling great heights

Before taking on this puzzle, you might want to hit the save point a couple rooms to the left.  Head back to the help point and fire two rotation portals on the floor next to it, flip onto the ceiling and then fall up.  Once you reach the elevator over the broken glass, hop onto it.  When it reaches its apex, you can fire a gateway portal on the ceiling past the two giant monkoids.  Ust it to skip them and make your way to the next puzzle.

6.4 Need a lift?

Stand on the button, fire a time portal at the wall to the left, let the meter fill up, walk to the ledge and fire another portal on the ground.  Leap through it and make sure not to hit your echo on the way out.  Hop on the now moving elevator and grab your reward… an extra echo.

6.5 Nested doors

Stand on the first button, fire a time portal at the wall to your upper right and let the meter fill.  Stand on the ledge to your left and open a second time portal on the wall down below.  Pass through it, hop over your echo and stand on the second button.  Wait until your echo is about to open the second portal and then repeat.  Make sure not to lock yourself behind any of the doors by waiting too long.  Timing is key.  And, to reward your good timing, you’re awarded even more.  While we’re in the neighborhood, let’s grab one more power up.

6.6 Gravity of the situation

This is an easy one.  Fire two rotation portals next to the help point and fall up for your reward — a jump boost.  Very handy.  Let’s get back to the main quest.  Head towards the next objective on your map.

Chapter 7 – At the Mountains of Madness

7.1 Long way round

Open a time portal above the help point and run like hell down the corridor to your left.  Stand on the button for a bit and run back down the corridor.  Open a second time portal on the wall above and to your left, hop through it, stand by the door and wait for your echo to open it.  Move along.

7.2 Risky ride

At the help point, open a rotation portal on the upper corner of the wall to your left.  Open a second portal on the floor and step through.  Now you’re going to have to ride the elevator — except you’ll be riding on its edge.  There’s some tough platforming ahead.  Good luck.

7.3 Speed demon

Time for a quick detour.  Follow the red path on the screenshot above to the next puzzle.  You need a jump boost.  Open a rotation portal on the wall all the way to the right of the help point.  Open another one on the floor.  Hop through it, grab the jump boost and head back again.

7.4 Round and round

From the help point, open a rotation portal on the wall to your lower left, then open a second on the floor to your lower right.  Pass through the portal on the floor, hop down, make a running jump and pass through it again.  Then jump up towards it and pass through yet again.  Jump to your left and step on the button to open the door.  A prize awaits.

Make use of the multi gun!

This little number allows you to use multiple portal guns at once.  You can open any combination of gateway, resizer, or rotation portal.  Once you open a time portal though, you won’t be able to use your other portals, so make sure everything is all set up before you do.

And now the game is as complicated as it’s going to get.  Very complicated, to be clear.

7.5 Multiness

Here’s your first multi gun challenge.  Open a large resize portal on the floor beneath the help point and a small one on the wall to your left.  Now that you’re tiny, take out the rotation gun and open a portal on the wall to the right.  Jump down and open another rotation portal on the floor.  Fall through and step on the button.  Move along.

7.6 Double dilemma

Open a gateway portal on the floor below the help point and another on the button to the upper right.  Then stand to the left of the help point and fire a time portal above the button to the upper left.  Let the meter fill, then open a second time portal on the wall to your left.  Pass through it, and stand on the left button — make sure you stand as far left as you can so you don’t bump into yourself.  When your echo opens the second portal, follow him through.  Use the gateway portals to get up to the right button.  Stand on it, then follow your echoes through the second time portal and be on your way.

7.7 Wall switch

Open a rotation portal on the floor to the left of the help point and another on the wall to your left.  Pass through.  Stand on the button, fire a time portal at the wall to your right, wait a bit and open another one on the wall to your left.  Pass through and be happy.  Hit the save point and open the door down below — it’s a shortcut.  Then on to the next objective.   Now things get crazy.

7.8 Boxed laser

From the help point, open a gateway portal on the ceiling near the left hand ledge.  Walk to the right ledge, aim down and fire another gateway portal onto the floor all the way to the right.  Then open a large resize portal onto the ceiling next to the first gateway portal you opened.  Immediately beneath it open a small resize portal.  It should look something like this:

Then open a time portal on the ceiling above and to the right of the help point.  Immediately jump through the large resize portal on the ceiling so that you come out small.  Run to your right, jump down and stand on the button.  Let your time meter fill about halfway, then run through the gateway portal to your right.  Pass through it, and jump off the left hand ledge.  Open your second time portal on the floor and pass through it.

Head to the left hand ledge again, then walk off it, immediately moving right so that you hug the wall and land on the ledge with the second button.  Stand on it until your echo jumps off the ledge and opens the second time portal on the floor.  Follow him through it and run through the now open door.

Phew…

7.9 Dancing on the ceiling

This puzzle terrifies me.  First thing’s first — fire two rotation portals on the wall to the right of the help point, one above the other. Then stand on the button in the middle of the room and fire a time portal at the lower segment of the wall to your left, like so:

Let your time meter fill and then open a second time portal on the floor beneath the help point.  Pass through it.  Hop through the bottom rotation portal and stand on the button to the right.  Wait until your echo opens the second time portal, jump back through the rotation portal you just passed through, and then follow your echo through the second time portal.

Stand next to your first self for a bit — you need to give yourself some breathing room for further echoes.  Do not touch yourself!  Then run over to the button on the bottom right and stand on it until just before your echo opens the second time portal.  Follow him through it.

Then jump through the bottom rotation gateway again.  Run over to the button on the left, stand on it until your echo opens the second time portal and follow him through.  When you do, make sure you get ahead of the echo that stood by your original self for a second.  Head out the door and be on your way.  Take a deep breath.  Get a cup of coffee.  You’ll need it for this next puzzle.

7.10 Splitting the laser (or as I am going to call it, “This puzzle will give you post-traumatic stress syndrome”)

Okay.  Prepare yourself.  Fire a gateway portal at the wall in the upper left hand corner.  Stand on the button to open the door to your right.  Open some time portals to get to the other side of that door and then cancel them when you do.  Then open a second gateway portal on the far right wall.  Now you can get back and forth.

Next pass through the gateway back to the help point.  Open a large resize portal on the ceiling to the immediate left of the center door.  Open a small resize portal on the wall to your left.  It should look like this:

Once all your portals are placed, head back through the left gateway to get to the other side of door.  Once there, fire a time portal at the ceiling, halfway between the button and the right hand gateway portal.  Run back through the gateway, hop up on the ledge next to the center door, and jump through the resize portal on the ceiling.

Now that you’re eensy weensy, use the mirror to reflect the laser towards the right.  Once your time meter is full, open a second time portal directly beneath you so that the laser will project through the first time portal you opened.

Now that you’ve fallen through the newly opened time portal, run right through the gateway portal.  Hop over your echo who is reflecting the laser, stand beneath the target and reflect the laser upwards at it.  Once your echo opens the second time portal, follow him through.

Now that you’re back on the other side, reflect the laser towards the right.  Once again, when your initial echo opens the second time portal, run back through the gateway portal to your right and follow him through.  Head left and reflect the laser up towards the target just like you did on the other side.  Once your initial echo opens the second time portal again, head through the right hand gateway portal.  Once you do, pass through the resize portal on the left hand wall, get big, and follow your echoes down the second time portal.  Hop your way up and pass through the door.  Now, breathe a sigh of relief.

If you have any trouble finishing this puzzle, I have two suggestions.  Use your power orbs to solve it automatically, or look at your map and go explore the few locations you haven’t visited. There are more power-ups, some of which will make these final puzzles much easier.  You have all the tools you need to get them, so if you’re feeling adventurous, explore!  I suggest it.  One of these power ups will allow you to walk through your echoes without penalty.  You might want that…

7.11 Round the clock (or, as I’ll call it, “Spiral of insanity”)

From the center button, fire one rotation gateway at the right wall, slightly above the floor.  Fire a second rotation portal on the floor to the left of the button directly underneath the abutment halfway between the center button and the help point.  Then fire a time portal at the far left of the ceiling above you.  Your setup should look exactly like this:

After firing the time portal, step off the center button and stand to the left of it for a second or two.  This will give your future echoes some breathing room.  Then stand on the button until the time meter fills.  At the absolute last second, open a second time portal on the floor directly to the right of the center button.  Pass through it, hop over yourself and enter the rotation portal on the floor to the left.  Make your way left and stand on the button.  Wait until your echo opens the second time portal and follow him through it.  Be sure to let your echoes pass.

Once through, hop through the rotation portal that was originally on the floor to your left — it’s now the bottom most rotation portal on the right wall.  You’ll fall down.  Then go stand on the button until your echo opens the second time portal again.  Walk left, jump up the ledges and and follow your echoes through the second time portal — it’s now on the ceiling.  After jumping through, hop through the rotation portal directly above.  Then pass through the time portal yet again.  Jump through the rotation portal on the left wall.  Now you can hop up the ledges along the right wall and pass on through the door.  I bet that took you more than one try.

7.12 The final puzzle
