Get ready for some mech-on-mech action
If you’ve ever dreamed of leading giant robots into battle, Offworld, a new game to be published by 6waves that puts players at the head of a company of intergalactic bounty-hunting “Strikers,” might be just your thing.
As the most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy, you’re hot on the trail of Ace Stokes, a dashing rogue who’s wanted for crimes of various sorts by the local planetary government. But you’re not the only one on his tail, and your rivals are determined to get him first, even if they have to go through you to do it.
Combat in Offworld takes place in one-on-one battles between futuristic “Strikers” – the game’s term for massive robotic war machines of various sorts – and although it starts off relatively simply, it promises to grow increasingly complex as the game progresses. Players must choose weapon systems, activate defensive shields, manage energy and more, and while none of it is particularly complex, staying one step ahead of the computer – deciding when to shoot, when to fortify and when to get out of Dodge – can be a challenge.
The story unfolds in what appears to be a fairly linear fashion across a number of planets, each with multiple locations in which to do battle. You’ll be able to purchase and upgrade Strikers, hire new pilots and more, and the developer promises that Offworld will take players on an “epic story-driven quest.” I can’t speak to that, but I can say that it looks absolutely gorgeous, with sharp, colorful visuals that are nothing short of stunning. This is a game that really needs to be seen to be appreciated.
Offworld is free-to-play, which means that optional purchases can be made via the in-game store. I haven’t played enough yet during my hands-on time to judge how much players will need to rely on real-money transactions for success, but I can say this: Giant fighting robot aficionados won’t want to miss it.
