Fieldrunners 2 Preview

Fieldrunners is a game that holds a special place in my heart. When I bought an iPod Touch back in 2008 right after the App Store launched, it was the first game I downloaded. And as a tower defense fan, I fell in love. Since that time though, its developer has seemed content to do little more than port their game to new device after new device (and release the occasional update), with little in the way of a sequel announcement. But today, all of that changed.

One of the iPhone’s first (and best) tower defense games is finally getting a sequel

Subatomic Studios has just announced that Fieldrunners 2 is well into production, and will debuting on the iPhone at the end of June. An iPad version will follow shortly thereafter (and if their rollout is anything like the original, don’t be surprised if you can play this on everything except your toaster within the next 3 years).

Details on the sequel are sparse at the moment, but Subatomic are promising “more levels, more weapons, more enemies, and more ways to play.” Likewise, we can confirm that you’ll be facing 30 different enemy types across 20 different levels, and you’ll be blasting those baddies to smithereens using 20 different types of upgradable towers, including rail guns and nukes.

The screens that Subatomic have released showcase a big step up in visuals, but they still manage to maintain that classic Fieldrunners look and charm. In fact, the hand-painted levels here manage to pop with color in a way that few mobile games have.

Can’t wait to slap on a helmet and jump back into the fray? Be sure to follow Fieldrunners 2 in Gamezebo’s WannaPlay app to be notified on your iPhone the moment it’s released!
