Kickstarter Picks: Saturday Morning RPG

As a child of the 80’s, there are few upcoming games as high on my radar as Saturday Morning RPG. When we first previewed the game back in November, I was all but wiping the drool from my keyboard as I typed. But like many great Saturday morning cartoons, it looks like this one might be cut short before it’s time. At least, it might unless Mighty Rabbit Studios gets some help!

The developers reached out to us earlier this week, putting out the metaphorical bat signal to let us know about their current Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed to see this game to completion. “As a small developer, we are out of our budget and have implemented a SaturdayMorningRPG Kickstarter campaignto try and cover a gap in keeping the company alive in the month we’ll be doing final polish and refining,” Mighty Rabbit’s Ben Moore tells us. “We’re worried if the campaign doesn’t meet its goal … we’ll lose some key employees that will drastically effect updates for the games, the final quality of it, and whether we can stay in business long enough to see any revenue from the games themselves and stop the series at the beginning.”

We spent a lot of time talking about why this game looks so great in our preview, but for those of you who missed it, here’s the quick version: Saturday Morning RPG is an episodic role-playing game that parodies and pays homage to just about everything you loved from 80’s popular culture – particularly Saturday morning cartoons. Your character will keep notes in his Trapper Keeper, use his magic powers to borrow elements of items (like the transforming power of Transformers), and meet a host of character reminiscent of everyone from Cobra Commander and Alvin & the Chipmunks. Of course – don’t expect anything to have an authentic name attached to it – otherwise they’d have to start another Kickstarter campaign solely to raise funds for a legal defense.

Pledge rewards run the gamut from thank you postcards to VHS tapes to a custom Saturday Morning RPG NES. Check out their project page for all the details.
