What a long, strange trip it’s been. Back in the summer of 2010, TheCodingMonkeys released one of the best digital board game adaptations of all time with Carcassonne for the iPhone and iPad. It had everything you could ever dream of… except for Carcassonne‘s many expansions.

And while we were promised they were coming, we’ve seen a multitude of things happen in the last 18 months in the world of Carcassonne that didn’t include the surfacing of these iOS expansions. The print version celebrated its tenth anniversary. Players were introduced to “The Phantom” meeple. A different digital version hit Android phones – and it featured one of the expansions at launch!

But for all the time that’s come and gone, our wait is finally at an end. Players can now purchase The River and Inns and Cathedrals from within the app. And while it’s only two of the more than a dozen expansions and mini-expansions, The Coding Monkeys have always maintained that they “plan to include expansions if they work on the platform (including some or all of the mini-expansions).”

As The River is a mini-expansion, it will only cost you 99 cents to add to your existing app, while the larger Inns and Cathedrals will be $1.99. And as a diehard Carcassonne fan, I can assure you – both are worth owning. Now if only they’d add Traders and Builders to the set…
