Social games aren’t exactly common on Kickstarter, but the OONi Games Project isn’t all that common either. It’s not just a new game on Facebook or Google+. In fact, it’s not just a game: it’s a platform.
The ambitious project lets players create a custom character, called an OONik, that can be used in a variety of different games. And all of the games are connected. So the coins you earn and the goals you achieve carry over across the different OONi games. It’s essentially a new social platform devoted specifically to games. The team behind it is even encouraging indie game developers to join up to help populate the virtual world with new games.
It’s an awfully bold project, even more so than you might think.
“We do not only want to fulfill our lifelong dream of making video games: we want to change the world,” the team wrote on its Kickstarter page. “Ok, that’s a big goal. But we know we have to start little by little. We will partner with small and medium entreprises that might benefit from our reach, and encourage our users to do something beneficial to society. In return, we will reward them with premium goods.”
The OONi Games Project is looking to raise $25,000, and at the time of this write has managed to raise just over $600. But there’s still more than three weeks to go. If you do donate you’ll be able to earn rewards ranging from t-shirts and the game’s soundtrack to in-game characters and an artbook.
