Modern Combat 3’s story revealed
Shooter fans got a nice shot of adrenaline earlier this month when Gameloft announced that Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation was on the way – and the announcement only got more exciting when we saw the trailer. Now the publisher has declassified a number of the game’s secrets, all courtesy of an interview with the game’s producer that they’ve kindly posted on the official Gameloft Blog.
The biggest new piece of information to come out of the Q&A is confirmation about the game’s story. As we’d suspected from the trailer, players will be defending the United States from an invasion. The opposition? A “private military force” made up of traitorous soldiers from North Korea, Pakistan, and Russia. Each has their own reasons for their anti-American viewpoints, but they’ve put their difference together to launch a surprise attack on US soil. You’ll be stepping into the military boots of Corporal James Walker as his team Anvil-1 goes to Los Angeles to search through the ruins of NSA headquarters.
Better than the story details, though, was the producer’s enthusiasm about the scope of the game. It doesn’t sound like this is going to be some stripped down shadow of an FPS game like other mobile releases. Modern Combat 3 is going to adhere to the motto ‘go big or go home’;
“We wanted Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation to be about super large scale fights, something that hasn’t been done on smartphones. We wanted to make a point that smartphone gaming can be as huge and awesome as on any other home console. Every location the player will visit in Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation has something impressive to offer. This is not a game about corridor fights. Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is about large scale war.”
In addition to the interview, the post shares up some terrific concept art, the highlights of which can be seen below;

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation to hit mobile devices this fall
If series like Call of Duty and Battlefield have taught us anything, it’s that when you have a great military shooter out there, you’d better have a sequel lined up right around the corner. This is a lesson that Gameloft seems to have taken to heart, as they’ve just announced the third mobile entry in their Modern Combat series, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation.
Launching sometime this fall, Fallen Nation will feature a 13 mission campaign mode and multiplayer that’s looking to surpass the exceptionally high watermark Gameloft set for themselves in Modern Combat 2. This time around, multiplayer fanatics can expect support for up to 12 players, 6 maps, and 6 different modes. What’s more, the game will offer a ranking system featuring more than 90 different ranks to earn your way through.
In terms of visuals, Gameloft is boasting that Fallen Nation will feature “next-gen high quality visuals that will compete with the RAGE and UNREAL engines.” It’s a lofty claim to make – and one that’s somewhat peculiar, considering Gameloft’s other upcoming military shooter March of Heroes will be built using the Unreal engine.
Not much is known about the story yet, but considering Gameloft is describing it as “an apocalyptic battle for U.S. freedom,” it seems as though the “fallen nation” of the title might just be the United States of America. Also, a little birdie tells me that the environments depicted in the game’s first screenshots are Alaska and Los Angeles.
Expect this one to hit the iPhone, iPad, and Android later this year.
