Wooga tackles the world of city building in Magic Land
With its latest release wooga, the developer behind Facebook games like Diamond Dash and Bubble Island, is tackling the world of medieval city building. Magic Land takes place in, you guessed it, a magic land filled with everything from castles and princesses to trolls and dragons. Though the developer claims that there are adventure and role-playing elements in the game, early on Magic Land is all about building a town.
When you first start a game Magic Land you’ll need to scare away a sneezing dragon so that it won’t burn down your castle. This gives you a good sense of what the game is all about: it’s a lighthearted, goofy take on fantasy. The graphics are achingly adorable and everything is bright and colorful, as wooga games are known to be.
The gameplay, meanwhile, feels fairly standard and not unlike what you’d find in a game like Mini Kings. You chops down trees, farm for food, build homes, and just generally attempt to create a nice little medieval town. There’s even an upgradable castle not unlike that found in Trade Nations. As you explore and complete quests your town will be beset by creatures like trolls, and you can get rid of them with a few clicks. It feels a lot like Ravenwood Fair.
In fact, Magic Land in general feels like it’s combining elements found in other games in an attempt to create a new experience. However, wooga is describing the game as a “mix of role-playing, village building simulation, and adventure features.” Hopefully these additional elements will become apparent as we progress through the game. There are also plenty of spots on the game map listed as coming soon, shrouded in fog, such as new areas to explore and even a boat.
In addition to the main Facebook game, wooga is also preparing the release of a HTML5, smartphone spinoff called Magic Land: Island.
