SimplePhysics – Game Introduction

SimplePhysics is a puzzle building game from Andrew Garrison for the iPhone and iPod Touch. With very limited resources and space, you’ll need to craft structures that can withstand forces in the game. With Gamezebo’s strategy guide, you’ll be able to become a master of physics in no time!

Getting Started

SimplePhysics

  • To begin playing SimplePhysics, you’ll need to start downloading the app by clicking the “Play Now” button above.
  • Once the game has finished installing, tap on the icon labeled “SimplePhysics” on your home screen to launch it.
  • You will be taken to the main menu where you can then pick a tutorial to help you along the way.

Gameplay Screen

  • At the top of the screen is where your main options are. The arrow icon is your “undo” button, which allows you to undo whatever your last action was on your blueprint.
  • The hammer icon is a toggle between the build and delete modes. If you make a mistake or want to delete an area in your blueprint, you can switch between the modes here. You can tell which mode you are in as the hammer icon will change to an X when you are in the delete mode.
  • The list icon is where you can perform several functions such as loading saved blueprints, saving blueprints or returning to the main menu.

SimplePhysics

  • The play icon is the last icon on the screen and is where you can perform main game functions. You can check your leaderboard standing here, perform a finger or certification test and email your blueprint to friends.

Tree House Level

  • The first level in SimplePhysics, labeled “Tutorial” is designed to show you the basics in the game from the controls to the concepts of building.
  • This level requires that you stay within a budget of $250 and be able to hold four 50 lb. children. Whichever structure you end up building will be a makeshift tree house.

SimplePhysics

  • Editing blueprints is very easy, and only takes a few seconds to understand to use. The blue grid is the only area in which you are aloud to build in. However, you are allowed to build your structure in anyway you want within that grid.
  • In this initial tutorial level, you start with a bit of a pre-built structure to give you a small sense and idea on what type of structure you can build.
  • If you want to see if this ready-built structure will work, go ahead and perform a certification test from the play menu. As you can see, this structure failed on the first “child.” Time to re-work this.
  • Essentially, you’ll need to create a structure that has strong support under the platform, and does not break the budget.
  • An example that I built for this level is below. This design cost $146 to build and passed the level easily.

Snowy Roof Level

  • This next level involves supporting the roof of a house in order to hold 50,000 lbs. of snow. A $325 budget does make things tight, but there’s still little worry here.
  • The first thing you will want to do is make a bottom line structure so that the roof is completely connected to the house. Now, you will need to make what I call a “second roof” in that you should now make a series of diagonal lines to form an A-frame like structure as shown below:

  • A good practice is to make sure that both sides are symmetrical, so that both sides stay even structurally and no side is stronger than the other.
  • If you need help building further, look below for an example that I have made of this level. This structure worked, and only cost $208 to make. That is well below the $325 budget you were allotted as well.

Ferris Wheel Level

  • The Ferris wheel level is a bit challenging, as you are expected to build an amusement ride that functions and will only cost $2,250 to build. No sweat, I say.
  • The most important factor to keep in mind with this level is balance. Due to the wheel constantly moving, you will need to make sure every part of the structure is as important as the next because the stresses will be continually moving.
  • If you would like a working example of this structure, look below. This example cost $2,218 to make and easily makes the 2 full revolutions required to pass the level.

Windy City Level

SimplePhysics

  • This level is the most difficult yet in the game as you are required to build a skyscraper in a very windy city that can withstand 300 mph winds and only use $175,000 to make it happen.
  • The trick to this level is actually backwards from the other levels in the game. You will need to give your building a bit of a give at the top, allowing it to sway with the wind.
  • Start by making small vertical lines from the top to the bottom of the skyscraper, with a horizontal line to support the bottom of the building.
  • Now, build a long line of X’s all the way to the top right side. Once you have completed these steps, you will have a skyscraper that can withstand the winds.
  • You can see an example of this design below. This example costs $115,533 to make, which is well below the $175,000 budget you are given.
