Dessert Heroes is set to serve up a slice of restaurant sim with a dollop of mini-game

The baking bug seems to have bitten iOS developers in recent months, with games like Bakery Story and Tiny Chef quickly soaring up the charts and becoming a daily delight for food-friendly freemium gamers. Dessert Heroes is gearing up to join the fray, but this new release from Astro Ape Studios – the team behind Office Heroes – is looking to bring something fairly unique to the dining table.

Expected to launch this Thursday, Dessert Heroes will blend typical restaurant-style social gameplay with mini-games, letting players step away from the social kitchen for some simple quickplay fun.

Gamezebo was given an early look at the game, and while the kitchen mechanics feel stripped down – you won’t need to worry about seating, or things like tapping ingredients to get baked goods started – the mini-game portions more than helped balance out any inadequacies felt in Astro Ape’s adaptation of the restaurant formula.

During our brief hands-on, we experienced three mini-games that offered a good deal of variety. The first was a faithful interpretation of the Deal or No Deal formula, in which players would eliminate cupcakes that were hiding different values in an attempt to walk away with the most sugar (the preferred currency in the world of Dessert Heroes.) The second game we encountered had us tapping a cake like madmen, trying to get as much sugar as we could while trying not to tap a large bomb that flew around the environment. The third simulated a lottery scratch ticket. While our experience with the game thus far has been limited, we can say with certainty that no two mini-games were alike.

In addition to baking and mini-game playing, Dessert Heroes offers a good deal of customization. Whether you’re looking to tweak the appearance of your bakery or your avatar, players will have a number of options at their disposal. For the right price, players can even swap out their avatar’s head for a cute zoo-themed one.

Social elements are here as well, with players being able to visit their friends, send gifts, and clean up neighboring shops – all courtesy of the Plus+ network.

Can’t wait to get baking a few cupcakes of your own? Dessert Heroes is expected to hit the App Store this Thursday.
