Earlier this month, BBC Online announced that it would be bringing 4 completely free Doctor Who adventure games to both the PC and Mac. Set to debut in June, the developers were tight-lipped about what players could expect in terms of story from each of these digital episodes. But as any avid viewer of Doctor Who this season can tell you, “silence will fall.” As such, details about the first episode game have now surfaced.
City of the Daleks will pit the Doctor and his new companion Amy Pond against his greatest and deadliest adversary, the Daleks. Like the other planned episodes, City of the Daleks is considered an integral part of the current season, offering up story elements that tie into the overall story of Doctor Who Series 5. Considering that these Daleks appear to be bred from the new superior race of Daleks that debuted in last week’s television episode, it looks as though the developers are remaining true to their word.
In City of the Daleks, the TARDIS (the Doctor’s time machine) arrives in London 1963 to find everything destroyed. All of humanity has been wiped out, leaving the Doctor’s assistant Amy as the last survivor of the human race. The Daleks have seized control of time and the only chance of stopping them is for the Doctor to make a trip to the Dalek home planet of Skaro.
For the first time since the series debut nearly 50 years ago, the Doctor will visit the capital city of Skaro, Kaalann. The game’s writer Phil Ford (previously a screenwriter on the Sarah Jane Adventures) describes Kaalann as a city “constructed from pure anger and hate.” Never an enemy to be defeated through sheer force, the Daleks should provide a great entry point for this adventure series, allowing the Doctor to outwit his opponents with his usual aplomb.
Three more free episodes are to follow, however the details surrounding those games are still a carefully guarded secret. The first chapter of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, City of the Daleks will be available as a free download from the BBC website starting on June 5th.
