Welcome to Gamezebo’s walkthrough for Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 4 – The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood.

General Tips

Controls

  • Hold down the left mouse button and then move the mouse in a direction to make Guybrush walk in that direction. In most areas you can also hold down the right mouse button while Guybrush is walking to make him run.
  • Alternatively, the keyboard keys W, A, S and D can be used to make Guybrush walk, and the shift key can be held down at the same time to make him run.
  • Single left click when the cursor is over a hotspot to interact with an object or character.
  • Right click to skip a line of dialogue.
  • Hold down the F4 key to identify all the hotspots in an area.
  • Press the I key to open the inventory.
  • Press the Escape key to return to the menu.


Saving and Loading

To save, press ESC to bring up the menu and then click Save & Load. Use the red arrows to scroll through to a blank saved game and then click the Save Game button. Saved games are given a location, date, time and description of what has happened in the adventure so far. To load, press ESC to bring up the menu and then click Save & Load. Use the red arrows to scroll through to a previously saved game and then click the Load Game button.


Inventory

Press the I key to bring up the inventory. Left click to select an item and it will be tagged onto the cursor. The item will glow green when it is moved over an object in the playing area that it can be used on. Some objects can also be combined by using them on another item in the inventory window. To combine objects, place an object in each of the circles at the left side of the inventory window and then press the plus sign between the circles to try and combine them. Objects can also be examined by selecting the magnifying glass at the top-left corner of the inventory window and then selecting the item.

 

Item List

5 Empty Volcano Shot Glasses

Found after looking at the Blood Island Volcano Shots sign in Club 41. The shot glasses are used on the skull candle in Club 41 to get the cup of hot wax, on the puddle outside the glassworks to get the cup of molten glass and on the weird oozing fluid outside the Marquis De Singe’s house to get the cup of mysterious caustic fluid. It is not necessary to use the shot glasses on anything else, but they can also be used on the manatee oil leak outside Club 41 to get the cup of hot manatee oil and on the grease puddle at the end of the dock to get the cup of hot grease.

 

Blood Island Volcano Shot

Found after looking at the Blood Island Volcano Shots sign in Club 41. It is not used.

 

Burned Out Leg Lamp

Available after the leg shaped lamp with moths has been used on Stan. It is used on the jungle beast in the jungle so that the lion’s paw can be taken.

Court Briefs

Available at the start of the game. They can be examined in the inventory to see what crimes Guybrush is charged with.

 

Cup of Hot Grease

Found by using one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the grease puddle at the end of the dock. It is not used.

 

Cup of Hot Manatee Oil

Found by using one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the the manatee oil leak outside Club 41. It is not used.

 

Cup of Hot Wax

Found by using one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the the skull candle in Club 41. It is combined with the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn make the leg lamp with violet, jolly roger shaped burn.

 

Cup of Molten Glass

Found by using one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the the puddle outside the glassworks. It is used on the leg-shaped lamp outside the glassworks to get the leg lamp with black, blobby burn. If the leg lamp has been combined with an incorrect cup of liquid, the leg lamp can be combined with the cup of molten glass to return to the leg lamp with black, blobby burn.

 

Cup of Mysterious Caustic Fluid

Found by using one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the weird oozing fluid outside the Marquis De Singe’s house. It is combined with the leg lamp with black, blobby burn to make the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn.

 

D’oro’s Map

Found by giving the "pox of LeChuck" glass eye to D’oro in the prison cell. After calling D’oro to the stand in the court house, the map is used on D’oro.

 

Elaine’s Ring

Found by taking La Esponja Grande on the table while Elaine is at the witness stand in the court house. It is not used.

 

Feast for the Senses Menu

Found by talking to the voodoo lady about La Esponja Grande after she has been put in the prison cell. The six courses that are needed to make La Esponja Grande mature are written on one side of the menu. A map of the Flotsam Island jungle is on the other side of the map. When Guybrush is searching for the sixth sense voodoo course in the jungle, the map is folded to change the layout of the paths in the jungle.

 

Fugu Jolokia

After Guybrush’s tongue has been numbed by pressing the left button on the helmet in De Singe’s house, the hook is used to pick up the Fugu Jolokia pepper from Club 41. The Fugu Jolokia is the third item that is combined with La Esponja Grande. After the sack of sugar has been used on the bucket of water near the Vaycaylian wind control device, the Fugu Jolokia pepper is used on De Singe.

 

Glass Eye

Found by asking Crimpdigit at the glass house about glass eyes. After Guybrush asks a question to the judge in the court room while he is at the stand, the glass eye is used on the pox-enraged judge to get the "pox of LeChuck" glass eye.

 

Hook

Available at the start of the game. It is used on the locked cage outside the Marquis De Singe’s house to get Jacques the Monkey. It is used to unlock the back room door in De Singe’s house. After Guybrush’s tongue has been numbed by pressing the left button on the helmet in De Singe’s house, the hook is used to pick up the Fugu Jolokia pepper from Club 41. It is used to unlock the chest in the jungle after the feast for the senses map has been folded correctly.

 

Iron-leaking Beard Toy

Found by examining the toy in the inventory. It is used on the bowl of unhealthy-looking cat food near Hemlock McGee at the end of the dock.

 

Jacket Shreds

After the leg-shaped lamp with moths has been used on Stan, talk to Stan about the LeChuck doll to make the moths shred Stan’s jacket. The jacket shreds are the first item that is combined with La Esponja Grande.

 

Jacques the Monkey

Found by using the hook on the locked cage outside the Marquis De Singe’s house. After the iron-leaking beard toy has been used on the bowl at the end of the dock and after Hemlock McGee has been called as a witness in the court house, Jacques the Monkey is used on the cat.

 

La Esponja Grande

Found by taking La Esponja Grande on the table while Elaine is at the witness stand in the court house. It is combined with the jacket shreds, lion’s paw, Fugu Jolokia pepper and tarot cards. After Guybrush walks back and forth on the carpet in Club 41 and then exits the club, La Esponja Grande becomes static. It is then used on Vaycaylian wind control device. After De Singe has fallen into the wind control device, La Esponja Grande is used on the wind control device again.

 

Leg Lamp with Black, Blobby Burn

Found by using the cup of molten glass on the leg-shaped lamp outside the glassworks. It is combined with the cup of mysterious caustic fluid to make the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn.

 

Leg Lamp with Red, Parrot Shaped Burn

Made by combining the cup of mysterious caustic fluid with the leg lamp with black, blobby burn. It is combined with the cup of hot wax to make the leg lamp with violet, jolly roger shaped burn.

 

Leg Lamp with Violet, Jolly Roger Shaped Burn

Made by combining the cup of hot wax with the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn. It is used on Bosun Krebbs in the court house.

 

Leg-Shaped Lamp

Available after the leg lamp with violet, jolly roger shaped burn has been used on Bosun Krebbs in the court house. It is used on the moths at the creepy shack in the jungle after the voodoo lady has been arrested to get the leg-shaped lamp with moths.

 

Leg-Shaped Lamp with Moths

Found by using the leg-shaped lamp on the moths at the creepy shack in the jungle after the voodoo lady has been arrested. It is used on Stan to make the moths fly up to the neon sign.

 

Lion’s Paw

After the burned out leg lamp has been used on the the jungle beast in the jungle, the lion’s paw can be taken from the jungle beast. The lion’s paw is the second item that is combined with La Esponja Grande.

 

Phuzzy Nostril Recipe

Found on the table near the exit in Club 41 while Elaine and Morgan are fighting. It is used on the judge to move the fight back to the bar.

 

"Pox of LeChuck" Glass Eye

Found by using the glass eye on the pox-enraged judge in the court house after Guybrush asks a question while he is at the stand. It is given to D’oro in the prison cell to receive D’oro’s map.

 

Sack of Severed Legs

Found in the back room in the Marquis De Singe’s house. After the sack of sugar has been used on the well in the jungle to make the fireflies appear, the sack of severed legs is used on the well to get the sugar-dipped severed leg.

 

Sack of Sugar

Found after Bosun Kreggs slaps Guybrush while Elaine and Morgan are fighting in Club 41. It is used on the well in the jungle to make the fireflies appear. It is used on the bucket of water near the Vaycaylian wind control device.

 

Scabb Island Sling Recipe

Found on the right side of the bar in Club 41 while Elaine and Morgan are fighting. It is not used.

 

Sketch

The judge gives the sketch to Guybrush after Bosun Krebbs is called to the stand. It is not used.

 

Sugar-Dipped Severed Leg

After the sack of sugar has been used on the well in the jungle to make the fireflies appear, the sack of severed legs is used on the well to get the sugar-dipped severed leg. It is used on the altar in the jungle to summon the beast.

 

Tarot Cards

Found by using the hook to unlock the chest in the jungle after the feast for the senses map has been folded correctly. The tarot cards are the fourth item that is combined with La Esponja Grande.

 

Toy

Found after Stan has been asked about the magnetic beard toy he is selling. It can be examined in the inventory to see the iron-leaking beard toy. It is used on the bowl of unhealthy-looking cat food near Hemlock McGee at the end of the dock.

 

Tuna Colada Recipe

Found on Guybrush’s boot after he has walked into the icky puddle in Club 41 while Elaine and Morgan are fighting. It is given to the judge in Club 41 to distract him from his darts game.

 

Voodoo Summons

Available after Elaine leaves the court house. It is used on the dart board in Club 41 after the Tuna Colada recipe has been given to judge.

 

Walkthrough

Arriving in court

The episode starts on the dock on Flotsam Island, where Guybrush offers to pay money in exchange for his freedom. Select any topic and Guybrush will be summoned to the court house to answer for his crimes. When the judge asks how you plead, say "I plead not guilty!": The judge then asks who Guybrush would like to represent him on the case. Say "I guess I’ll represent myself.":

The judge agrees that Guybrush can represent himself, and Stan hands the court briefs to Guybrush. Select the red arrows to scroll through the list of crimes that Guybrush is charged with, then right click to put the list away. Talk to the judge and say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Baliff Hardtack" to call him to the stand.

 

Baliff Hardtack

Hardtack explains how Guybrush distracted him and then dug up his X. Talk to Hardtack and say "This whole story about your X is a big fat lie, isn’t it?". Say "C’mon, you’re lying, admit it.". Say "You LIE! Liar, liar, pants en fuego!" and Hardtack will admit that he was lying about the X. Talk to the judge and say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Bosun Krebbs" to call her to the stand.

 

Bosun Krebbs

Krebbs explains how Guybrush knocked nacho sauce into her lap and gave her a permanent scar on her leg. Guybrush receives a sketch of the scar on Bosun’s leg, which is shown as a purple skull and crossbones:

Talk to the judge and say "Your honor, I’d like to call a recess to confer with my client." to travel to the prison cell. Talk to Hardtack and say "I wanna see my lawyer!": He will open the prison door. Select any topic and Guybrush will walk out of the cell. Walk east along the dock and open the club door to enter Club 41, where Guybrush notices that the Marquis De Singe and Morgan LeFlay areĀ  talking.

Guybrush mentions that his wife has the Pox of LeChuck, so De Singe decides to capture her instead of Guybrush. After De Singe leaves the club, examine the sign behind the bar to order six Blood Island volcano shots:

Guybrush drinks five of the shots, leaving five empty volcano shot glasses and one Blood Island volcano shot in the inventory. Use one of the empty shot glasses on the skull candle to get a cup of hot wax. Exit Club 41. Run west to the glassworks and use one of the empty volcano shot glasses on the puddle to get a cup of molten glass:

Use the cup of molten glass on the leg-shaped lamp to get the leg lamp with black, blobby burn. Run west and cross over the bridge to the front door of De Singe’s house. Use the hook on the locked cage at the left side of the door to take Jacques the monkey. Use one of the empty shot glasses on the weird oozing fluid at the right side of the house to get a cup of mysterious caustic fluid. Open the inventory and combine the cup of mysterious caustic fluid with the leg lamp with black, blobby burn to make the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn:

Combine the cup of hot wax with the leg lamp with red, parrot shaped burn to make the leg lamp with violet, jolly roger shaped burn. Cross back over the bridge. Run east to the court house and talk to Hardtack. Say "I’d like to return to court to defend my client!" to enter the court house. Say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Bosun Krebbs" to call her to the stand. Use the leg lamp with violet, jolly roger shaped burn on Bosun Krebbs to prove that she is lying about the nacho sauce burn. Talk to the judge and say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Joaquin D’oro" to call him to the stand.

 

Joaquin D’oro

D’oro explains how Guybrush sold him a counterfeit Dark Ninja Dave figurine. Talk to the judge and say "Your honor, I’d like to call a recess to confer with my client." to travel to the prison cell. Talk to Hardtack and say "I wanna see my lawyer!" to leave the cell. Walk east and talk to D’oro in the right prison cell. Say "What happened to your eye?":

He says that his eye got infected and De Singe removed it, and now he needs a glass eye. Exit the conversation with D’oro. Run west to the glassworks and knock on the door to start talking to Crimpdigit. Say "Can you make me a glass eye?" to receive the glass eye. Run east to the court house and talk to Hardtack. Say "I’d like to return to court to defend my client!" to enter the court house.

Say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Guybrush Threepwood" to walk up to the stand. Select one of the top three topics to anger the judge. While the judge is angry, use the glass eye on the pox-enraged judge to get the Pox of LeChuck glass eye. Talk to the judge and say "Your honor, I’d like to call a recess to confer with my client." to travel to the prison cell. Talk to Hardtack and say "I wanna see my lawyer!" to leave the cell.

Walk east and give the Pox of LeChuck glass eye to D’oro in the right prison cell to receive D’oro’s map. Run west and talk to Hardtack outside the court house. Say "I’d like to return to court to defend my client!" to enter the court house. Say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Joaquin D’oro" to call him to the stand. Give D’oro’s map to D’oro and he will admit that he purchased the map from Stan. Talk to the judge and say "Call a witness…". Say "Call Hemlock McGee" to call him to the stand.

 

Hemlock McGee

McGee explains how Guybrush caused his cat to become frozen with fear. Talk to the judge and say "Your honor, I’d like to call a recess to confer with my client." to travel to the prison cell. Talk to Hardtack and say "I wanna see my lawyer!" to leave the cell. Run east and talk to Stan. Say "What’re you selling?". Select "Ask about magnetic beard toy": Stan realises that the toy doesn’t have a magnet and is leaking iron shavings, so he throws it away. Exit the conversation with Stan and take the beard toy that he threw away:

Run west to the other end of the dock to see McGee and his frozen cat. Use the toy on the bowl and Guybrush will pour some of the iron shavings into the cat food. Run east to the court house and talk to Hardtack. Say "I’d like to return to court to defend my client!" to enter the court house. Say "Call a witness…". Say "Hemlock McGee" to call him to the stand. Use Jacques the monkey on Hemlock’s cat and Hemlock will walk out of the court house.

 

Summoning Elaine

After all four cases have been dropped against Guybrush, the judge notices that there is a criminal charge on the other side of the paper. When the judge asks how Guybrush pleads to spreading the Pox of LeChuck on the island, say "Not guilty!". When the judge asks on what grounds, say "The pox isn’t my fault!" to explain about LeChuck.

Elaine enters the court house and after realising that Guybrush has been spending time with Morgan, she runs off to start a fight with her. Guybrush receives the voodoo summons from Hardtack and enters Club 41, where Elaine and Morgan are fighting. Take the scrap of paper on the table to see that it is a recipe for a Phatt Island Phuzzy Nostril drink:

Walk east and talk to Bosun Krebbs. Say "Tell me, did it hurt?": Elaine jumps up to the chandelier and knocks down a sack of sugar, and Krebbs runs off to the bathroom. Take the sack of sugar on the table:

Give the Phuzzy Nostril recipe to the judge and the fight will move back to the bar. Walk east down the stairs and examine the icky puddle that came from the bathroom. Walk away from the puddle and take the scrap of paper that is stuck to the bottom of Guybrush’s boot to see that it is a recipe for a Tuna Colada. Talk to Krebbs and say "Whatcha gonna do with all that gold?" to move the fight away from the bar. Give the Tuna Colada recipe to the judge and he will start making it. Use the voodoo summons on the dart board while the judge is making the drink and the fight will move back to the bar:

Talk to Elaine and Morgan and say "Elaine, tuckle-bear! Morgan’s all bark and no bite!": Elaine lunges forward and puts her sword through the voodoo summons on the dart board. Guybrush then returns to the court house with Elaine.

 

Finding the menu

Say "I’d like a second to think about my next move, your honor…". Walk west to the table and take La Esponja Grande. Guybrush unsuccessfully attempts to cure Elaine with the sponge, and is just about to be sentenced when LeChuck enters the court house and claims responsibility for the pox.

After Guybrush is released from the court house, walk to the right prison cell and talk to the voodoo lady about La Esponja Grande: She mentions that it must be brought to maturity by being fed six special voodoo courses. Examine the feast for the senses menu in the inventory to see a map. Unfold the map to see instructions for the feast, which mentions that the six courses must be completed in order. The icons can be selected to reveal further hints for the courses.

 

Sight

Run west to see De Singe running away from his house and then entering the jungle. Enter the jungle and select the creepy shack on the map:

Guybrush arrives in the area where the creepy shack used to be and sees D’oro. Use the leg-shaped lamp on the moths above the shack remains to get the leg-shaped lamp with moths. Select the icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen to return to the jungle entrance. Run east and select the dock on the map to return to the town.

Run east to Stan’s courtroom souvenir emporium. Use the leg-shaped lamp with moths on Stan and the moths will fly up to the neon sign. Talk to Stan and say "I see you’ve got some new souvenirs.". Select "Ask about LeChuck doll" and the moths will fly down to attack Stan. Take the remains of Stan’s jacket on the floor:

Combine the jacket shreds and La Esponja Grande in the inventory to complete the first course.

 

Smell

Run east and open the club door to enter Club 41. Examine the scary painting at the left side of the dartboard to see that Hemlock McGee painted the jungle beast:

Run west and cross over the bridge to the front door of De Singe’s house. Open the door to enter the house, where Guybrush discovers that Morgan has been stabbed with a sword. Examine the jar of dead fireflies on the table in the foreground to learn that the Flotsam jungle firefly is attracted to sugar water:

Use the hook on the backroom door to enter the backroom: Guybrush takes a sack of severed legs. Exit De Singe’s house and run west to the end of the dock to see Hemlock McGee. Talk to McGee and say "I hear you may know something about a ‘Jungle Beast.’": McGee says that meat is left for the beast on the altar in the jungle, and then in the morning the meat is gone. Exit the conversation with McGee. Run east and go up the path to enter the jungle. Select the jungle entrance on the map:

Run west along the bottom path to see Elaine and De Singe. After they leave the area, take the scrap of paper in the hand of the skeleton to read Pistalibre’s journal:

Pistalibre writes that the beast would be easier to follow if it left a path as bright as the Flotsam jungle fireflies. Run north from the skeleton to see the well. Use the sack of sugar on the well to attract the fireflies. Use the sack of severed legs on the well to get the sugar-dipped severed leg. Run south from the well and then east from the skeleton to see the altar that McGee mentioned. Use the sugar-dipped severed leg on the altar: Guybrush hears a growling noise in the bushes and runs away.

Run west to the altar to see that the leg has gone. The fireflies now point the correct path to take through the jungle. From the altar, run west and then north to see another scene with De Singe and Elaine. From the well, run north to the Vaycaylian calendar. The fireflies are now flying east over the green firefly-illuminated hidden trail:

Select the hidden trail to see the legendary jungle beast of Flotsam Island. Use the burned out leg lamp on the jungle beast and then take the stinky rotting lion’s paw from the beast’s mouth. Combine the lion’s paw and La Esponja Grande in the inventory to complete the second course.

 

Taste

Select the icon to return to the jungle entrance. Run east and then select the dock on the map screen. Run east and open the club door to enter Club 41. Examine the sign at the right side of the bar to read about the Fugu Jolokia challenge:

Talk to the judge and say "Tell me about this Fugu Jolokia Challenge…": The pepper can be won if Guybrush keeps his tongue on it for eleven seconds. Exit Club 41 and run west to return to De Singe’s house. Select the curious helmet:

Press the left button on the helmet to numb Guybrush’s tongue. Quickly run back to Club 41 and use the hook to pick up the pepper: Guybrush puts his numb tongue on the pepper for more than eleven seconds and wins the pepper. Combine the Fugu Jolokia and La Esponja Grande in the inventory to complete the third course.

 

Sixth Sense

Exit Club 41. Run west and go up the path to view the jungle map. Select the jungle entrance. Examine the feast for the senses menu in the inventory to view the map. Unfold the map to view the feast for the senses menu. Fold the top-left fold, top-right fold, bottom-right fold and bottom-left fold. Next fold the bottom fold and top fold: Guybrush will comment that it looks like a new map now:

The aim is to find the way to the red idol. Put the map away and the screen will shake, which means that the paths through the jungle have been changed. Run west along the lower path to the skeleton. Run east three times to the purple idol. Run south to the green idol. Run north to the red idol. Examine the feast for the senses menu again in the inventory to view the map. Unfold the top and bottom folds. Fold the top-left fold and bottom-left fold. Next fold the bottom fold and top fold:

Put the map away and the screen will shake again. Run west to see a locked chest. Use the hook on the locked chest to take the tarot cards. Combine the tarot cards and La Esponja Grande in the inventory to complete the fourth course.

 

Touch

Select the icon to return to the jungle entrance. Run east to view the jungle map and select the dock to return to the town. Run east and open the club door to enter Club 41. Walk to one end of the carpet on the floor and then walk back again to become static. Exit the club and Guybrush will fall back down the stairs with the static La Esponja Grande, which completes the fifth course.

 

Hear

Exit Club 41 and Guybrush will automatically travel to the Vaycaylian wind control device in the jungle. Guybrush and Elaine become trapped in the clamshells near De Singe. Use La Esponja Grande on the Vaycaylian wind control device and it will bounce back onto De Singe’s turban. Use the sack of sugar on the bucket of water at the left side of Guybrush to attract the fireflies:

Use the Fugu Jolokia on De Singe and he will put his head in the bucket of sugar water, which causes the fireflies to start flying around his turban. Talk to De Singe and say "You’ll never get past Elaine’s sword!": Guybrush’s pox-infected hand crawls into the wind control device and De Singe follows it. Use La Esponja Grande on the wind control device to complete the episode.
